USC Aiken Comes Up Just Short At Georgia College

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The University of South Carolina Aiken softball team dropped a doubleheader at Georgia College Sunday by scores of 3-1 and 10-7.

The Pacers are now 20-22-1 on the season while the Bobcats improve to 29-15.

Head coach Jerry Snyder's team fell behind 3-0 after the home squad plated a run in the first and two more in the third.

In the fifth, USC Aiken got on the board. Kristan Lowery doubled on a 2-0 pitch and promptly moved to third base when Leah Boghosian laid down a sacrifice bunt. With two down, Lowery scored on a failed pickoff attempt by the catcher, pulling the team within two at 3-1.

The Pacers had a chance to tie or take the lead in the sixth stanza. Hannah Price led off the inning with a walk. Sarah Timmerman came in as a pinch runner and hustled to second when Magan Jean Thrower singled to center field. After Hayley Elkins reached on a fielder's choice, Julianne Leduc was hit by a pitch to load the bases with two away. However, Lowery's grounder to shortstop ended the threat.

USC Aiken would try to knot the game in the seventh. Courtney Strauss came in as a pinch hitter and singled up the middle. With one down, Sydney Kate Murphy was hit by a pitch, but back-to-back outs ended the game.

In game two, the Pacers fell behind 6-0 after the first inning. The visitors got runners on first and second, but a strikeout and a groundout ended the threat.

USC Aiken managed to get things going in the third. Strauss singled to lead things off. She quickly moved to second base on a passed ball. Hannah Price drew a walk as did Thrower, loading the bags.

With one down, Lyndie Dorgan singled up the middle, plating Strauss. Leduc reached on an error, allowing Price to score. Hanna Hyder smacked a double to the gap, scoring Leah Boghosian and Dorgan, making it 6-4.

With two down, Brielle Jungblut rocketed a double to score Leduc and Hyder, tying the game at 6-6.

USC Aiken drew back-to-back walks in the top of the fourth, but three straight outs kept the contest at 6-6.

The Bobcats scored three in the bottom of the frame, but the Pacers continued to battle. Murphy reached on an error and Sarah Timmerman came back in to run for her. Jungblut's single put runners on first and second. Strauss ripped a single to left field, scoring Timmerman to make it 9-7. Two batters later with the bases loaded, a double play ended the threat.

USC Aiken loaded the bags in the sixth, but could not push across a run. The squad had a runner on base in the seventh, but a groundout ended the game.

For the game, Jungblut and Strauss had three hits apiece. Hyder and Jungblut led the way with two RBI each.

Thrower drew four walks in the game, tying the school record for a single game.

The Pacers return to action Thursday when they host Erskine in the home finale. First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 1:30 p.m. Live stats and video will be available at PacerSports.com.
