CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken softball team swept Queens by scores of 6-2 and 13-3 Tuesday afternoon in a pair of non-conference contests.
The Pacers are now 12-6-1 on the season while the Royals fall to 14-11.
In the opener,
Sydney Kate Murphy blasted a double down the left field line with one away in the top of the first.
Chandler Terrapin singled to left, plating Murphy for the 1-0 lead.
Magan Thrower followed her up with a single to center field.
Hannah Price made it 2-0 with her base knock.
Hayley Elkins made it 3-0 when her single to the gap in left center field.
Lyndie Dorgan laid down a bunt single to load the bases.
Brielle Jungblut pushed the margin to 4-0 with an infield single, scoring Price.
The Royals tried to get back in the game in the bottom of the first by placing two runners on with one out. However, Elkins recorded a strikeout and a pop fly to end the threat.
Neither team managed to get another base runner on until the top of the fifth. With one down, Terrapin belted a double down the line and scored on Price's single up the middle for a 5-0 edge. USC Aiken increased its lead to 6-0 in the sixth. Jungblut found a gap in the defense for a base hit. She promptly stole second base. With two down,
Kristan Lowery's pinch hit single allowed Jungblut to showcase her speed for a run.
The Royals plated two runs in the bottom of the sixth, but Elkins shut down the home team en route to the 6-2 win.
For the game, Jungblut, Price and Terrapin accounted for two hits apiece. Price drove in two runs while Terrapin scored twice.
Elkins tossed a complete game for the win. She struck out nine batters.
Trailing 1-0 in the second inning of game two, Snyder's team knotted the contest. Price delivered a double to right field. With two down, Elkins doubled to right center field, tying the game at 1-1. Jungblut singled to put runners on first and third, but USC Aiken was unable to take the lead at that point.
Snyder's team broke open the game in the third stanza with 11 runs. Murphy rocketed a pitch into right field and ended up on third base with a triple. Lowery doubled her in before Terrapin hit a two-run shot over the left center field fence.
Thrower followed it up with a single and
Leah Boghosian came in as a pinch runner. Price's base hit put two on and each moved up a base on a passed ball.
Courtney Strauss grounded out, but Boghosian scored on the play. Elkins and Jungblut got on base to load the bags.
Julianne Leduc's single scored two runners.
Murphy, batting for the second time in the inning, walked. Lowery singled in Jungblut. Terrapin drew a bases loaded walk to plate Leduc. Thrower produced one RBI before Price doubled in two more for the 12-1 lead.
Leading 12-3 in the top of the fifth,
Hanna Hyder came in as a pinch hitter and promptly connected for a base hit up the middle.
Janee McCarthy recorded a pinch hit single. An error put runners on first and third.
Kathleen St. Peter's groundout plated Hyder for a 13-3 margin.
For the game, Price led everyone with three hits. Lowery added two. Terrapin accounted for a game-high three RBI while Lowery and Price drove in two runners apiece. Murphy, Lowery, Price and Terrapin each crossed home plate twice.
Terrapin tossed a complete game for the win. She struck out seven while walking just three in the five-inning game.
The Pacers return to action Friday when they travel to Lenoir-Rhyne for a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
