AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken softball team posted a pair of victories over Montevallo by scores of 3-2 and 5-4 Saturday evening in a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader.
The Pacers are now 16-8-1 overall and 5-3 in league play while the Falcons stand at 12-13 overall and 3-4 against conference competition.
In the first game, USC Aiken jumped on top in the fourth inning as
Hannah Price ripped a pitch over the left center field wall for a 1-0 advantage.
The Falcons responded with a run in the top of the fifth. The Pacers had a chance to increase their lead a couple of times, but strong defensive play by Montevallo ended the threats.
The visitors took a 2-1 lead with a run in the seventh stanza, but head coach
Jerry Snyders' team is no stranger to a seventh-inning rally.
Hayley Elkins led off the frame with a single.
Courtney Strauss came in as a pinch runner and moved to second on
Julianne Leduc's sacrifice bunt.
Kristan Lowery singled while Strauss moved to third.
Hanna Hyder came in as a pinch hitter and promptly took a 2-2 pitch to left field for a single, scoring Strauss to force extra innings.
Neither team could muster a run despite having ample opportunities until the 12
th inning.
Chandler Terrapin reached on a throwing error and moved to second on Price's sacrifice bunt.
Magan Jean Thrower ripped a double down the left field line, scoring Terrapin for the 3-2 win.
Lyndie Dorgan worked all 12 innings to get the victory. She is now 4-0 on the season. Dorgan struck out three and gave up just two earned runs and walked two.
In the second game, the Falcons scored a run in the first and third for a 2-0 advantage.
USC Aiken battled back, scoring three runs in the bottom of the third for a 3-2 edge.
Sarah Timmerman singled through the left side to get things going.
Leah Boghosian blasted a double with the outfield playing in, putting runners on second and third.
Sydney Kate Murphy doubled down the left field line, scoring Timmerman. A wild pitch allowed Boghosian to score and put Murphy on third. Terrapin's single gave the home team a one-run lead, scoring Murphy.
Montevallo scored a pair of runs in the sixth for a 4-3 edge. However, Snyder's team would continue to battle.
With one down in the bottom of the seventh, Terrapin blasted a 1-0 pitch to the opposite field for a game-tying homer. Price took a 2-0 pitch and pulled it through the left side for a single.
Brielle Jungblut came in as a pinch runner and promptly stole second base. On an 0-1 pitch, Thrower ripped a double over the glove of the left fielder for the game-winning walk-off double as Jungblut crossed home for the 5-4 victory.
For the game, Boghosian, Murphy and Terrapin all had two hits. Terrapin drove in a pair of runs.
Elkins tossed a complete game and struck out 10 batters. She walked just two en route to earning the win.
