AIKEN, S.C. – The No. 1 University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team registered an 11-7 win against regional opponent Emmanuel Wednesday evening.
The Pacers are now 19-4 on the season while the Lions fall to 10-14.
USC Aiken fell behind 1-0 as the visitors earned a base hit and took an advantage of a fielding error by the Pacers to score an unearned run in the first. However, the Pacers responded quickly.
Jose Bonilla and
Luke Westerberg hit back-to-back singles and each advanced a base on a wild pitch.
Mitchell Price hit a sacrifice fly to score Bonilla and tie the game at 1-1.
After
Jamie Morlan put up a scoreless second inning, USC Aiken's offense kicked into gear. After a pair of hits from
Tyler Ammerman and Bonilla, Westerberg singled registering two RBI. Westerberg later crossed home plate on an RBI double from
Zach Moon to extend the lead to 4-1.
Following a scoreless third frame, the Pacers plated three more runs in the fourth to it a 7-1 contest.
Morlan gave up his sole earned run of the night in the fifth inning, but the Pacers fought back with a pair of singles from Ammerman and Westerberg to regain their six-run lead at 8-2.
In the sixth stanza, Moon blasted a solo shot to center field. Head coach
Kenny Thomas' team added two more runs to extend the Pacers' lead to 11-2.
Connor Norton and
Hunter Hubbard combined efforts for two consecutive scoreless innings.
Ty Alvey only allowed one earned run in the eighth.
The Lions did not go down without a fight, scoring four runs in the ninth, but came up short with a final score of 11-7.
Blake Cantrell came in and picked up the final out.
For the game,
Luke Westerberg went three-for-three with three RBI.
Zach Moon also chipped in three hits and three RBI while scoring twice.
Morlan picked up his first win of the season.
