USC Aiken Picks Up Road Win At No. 21 North Georgia

DAHLONEGA, Ga. – The University of South Carolina Aiken women's basketball team picked up its third straight victory by posting a 66-62 win at No. 21 North Georgia Monday evening.

The Pacers improve to 7-7 overall and 3-2 in PBC play. The Nighthawks fall to 12-2 on the year and 4-1 against conference competition.

Kwajelin Farrar paced head coach Mark Miller's team by tallying 12 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Rachelle Aupont added 11 points while Kate Duff hit double figures with 10 markers.

Emily Waters posted nine points and seven rebounds while Jasmine Coach registered eight points. Alexis Ware garnered seven points.

Carly Gilreath dished out a game-high six assists.

With the score tied at 8-8, Ware took a pass from Gilreath and converted a jumper at the 3:57 mark in the first quarter. Ware hit a pair of free throws for a 12-8 lead. Leading 12-11, Melyk Taouil hit a pair of charity tosses before Farrar nailed a jumper for a five-point margin.

The home team took the lead three times in the second period, but Farrar drilled a shot for a 24-23 advantage with 4:38 to play before halftime. Moments later, Coach took a pass from Taouil and buried a shot for a 33-28 lead heading into the second half.  

Although the Nighthawks took a 42-40 lead with 3:06 to go in the third quarter, Aupont nailed a shot from downtown for a one-point margin. USC Aiken increased its advantage to three with 21 seconds to play in the quarter on a jumper by Waters.

North Georgia pulled within one early in the fourth, but Miller's team answered with a 9-0 spurt. Aupont hit a three-ball. Farrar and Aupont made back-to-back baskets before Waters hit two free throws for a 54-44 lead at the 6:36 mark.

With under four minutes to play, Duff hit two charity tosses for a 12-point advantage. However, the home team would pull within two at 64-62 with 59 seconds to play but strong defense and a pair of free throws by Gilreath gave the visitors the four-point win.  

For the game, USC Aiken hit 23-of-53 (43.4 percent) from the floor. The squad buried 16-of-19 from the charity stripe (84.2 percent). The team held North Georgia to 24-of-68 shooting (35.3 percent) from the field, including a five-of-22 effort from downtown (22.7 percent).

Miller's team had the edge by an 18-14 margin in points off turnovers. The squad maintained a 10-8 margin in second-chance points, but the biggest difference came from bench points. USC Aiken tallied a 37-7 margin in that category.
