Pacers Sweep Braves

Box Score

PEMBROKE, N.C. – The No. 6 University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team held off UNC Pembroke en route to a 10-7 victory Sunday afternoon.

The Pacers are now 29-6 on the season, including a 19-5 mark against league foes. The Braves drop to 23-12 overall and 9-9 against conference competition.

Chaz Pal and Max Schoen led the way with three hits apiece. Pal, Tyler Ammerman and Nile Goings drove in two runs apiece. Ammerman crossed home three times while Pal and Mitchell Price were each plated twice.

Nick Jobst worked the final 2.2 innings to pick up the win. He struck out two and scattered four hits without allowing a walk or a run while improving to 5-1 on the season.

After a pair of scoreless innings, head coach Kenny Thomas' team jumped on top of the home squad with a five-run third stanza.

Tyler Ammerman led off the inning with a double to left field. He moved to third on a groundout. Pal's double to the opposite field allowed Ammerman to score. Pal scampered to third on a passed ball prior to Brian Parreira being hit by a pitch.

With two down, Schoen beat out a single back to the mound. Price drew a walk, plating Pal. Goings followed him up with a two-RBI single to right field for a 5-0 advantage.

UNC Pembroke managed to get four of those runs back in the bottom half of the inning, but the Pacers made it 6-4 in the fourth with a lead-off homer.

The Braves took a 7-6 lead after scoring a run in the sixth and two in the seventh, but USC Aiken was not out of the game.

In the eighth inning, Price led off the stanza with a single up the middle. Goings' single put runners on first and second. David Lankster laid down a sacrifice bunt, pushing both runners into scoring position.

Ammerman reached on a fielder's choice, driving in Price to make it 7-7. Skylar Mercado grounded out to the second baseman, plating Goings for what turned out to be the game-winning run.

Pal roped a single into center field, scoring Ammerman. Three batters later, Schoen's base hit allowed Pal to make it 10-7.

The Braves had a chance to tie or win the game in the bottom of the ninth, but Jobst forced a groundout with the bases loaded for the final out of the game.

The Pacers return to action Wednesday when they play at Newberry at 6 p.m. Live stats will be available at PacerSports.com.
