Box Score 2 AMERICUS, Ga. – The University of South Carolina Aiken softball team split a doubleheader at Georgia Southwestern Sunday afternoon. The Pacers won the first game 2-0 before falling 6-5 in the nightcap.
The Pacers are now 23-11 on the season, including a 7-5 mark against conference competition.
In the opener, head coach Jerry Snyder's team did not have its first base runner of the game until the top of the fourth. With two down, Samantha Chubb singled to left. Hannah Price roped a double, but Chubb was erased at the plate, keeping the contest scoreless.
Although Taylor Morgan gave up a hit to the Hurricanes in the bottom of the fourth, she managed to get out of the inning after striking out the final batter for third out.
Andrea Daring led off the sixth with a double to the gap in left center field. After Taylor Allen came in as a pinch runner, she hustled to third when Brielle Jungblut recorded a bunt single. Sarah Montei followed Jungblut up with a bunt single, loading the bases.
Sydney Murphy laced a single to center field, plating Allen and Jungblut for a 2-0 advantage. The two runs were more than enough for Morgan, who allowed just one walk over the final two frames en route to picking up the win.
For the game, Morgan gave up just one hit while striking out eight. Murphy drove in both runs while Montei, Murphy, Chubb, Price, Daring and Jungblut all had a hit.
Snyder's team jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the second game, but the Hurricanes managed to plate the final six runs en route to earning a split.
Montei led off the game with a double to right center. Murphy followed her up with a two-run homer.
The Pacers added a run in the second when Montei launched a solo round-tripper for a 3-0 margin with two down.
USC Aiken pushed its lead to 5-0 via the long ball once again. Price led off the stanza with a single to center field and moved to second on Magan Thrower's sacrifice bunt. Chandler Terrapin registered a two-run homer for the advantage.
Thanks in part to a couple of errors, the Hurricanes plated five runs in the fifth and the game-winner in the sixth.
