Box Score 2 ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The No. 20 University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team split a doubleheader at Flagler Saturday afternoon. The Pacers won the first game 12-11 in 12 innings before falling 6-4 in the nightcap.
The Pacers are now 33-13 on the season and 20-9 against league foes. The Saints are 25-18 overall and 12-14 against conference competition.
Zach Moon tied the school record with five hits in the contest. He also drove in five RBI iand scored three times in the opener. Chaz Pal registered four hits, drove in three and scored two while Brian Parreira and Max Schoen accounted for a pair of base knocks apiece. Mitchell Price crossed home twice.
Moon blasted two round-trippers while Pal and Parreira each hit one over the fence.
Head coach Kenny Thomas' team jumped on top of the Saints with a three-run first inning. With one down, Price singled and swiped second, but he was able to take his time scoring after Pal blasted a homer over the left center field wall. Not to be outdone, Moon launched a solo shot for a quick lead.
USC Aiken tacked on a run in the second and third frames for a 5-0 edge. In the third, Tyler Ammerman drew a walk prior to Skylar Mercado ripping a double to center field, pushing the score to 4-0. After Moon doubled to open the third, Jonathan Banks singled him home for the 5-0 score.
A Parreira round-tripper made it 6-1 in the fifth, but the home squad battled back to cut the deficit to 6-2 in the bottom of the frame. The teams traded a pair of runs in the sixth.
Thomas' team plated two runs, with the first coming on a Pal single that scored Nile Goings, who opened the inning with a walk. Moon followed him up with a single to center field, allowing Mercado to cross home.
After Moon singled home Price in the eighth, the Saints scored six runs in the bottom of the stanza for a 10-9 lead, but the Pacers would not give up. Schoen led off the game with a single to left center field prior to Luke Westerberg entering the game as a pinch runner. Goings blasted a double to the gap, knotting the score.
USC Aiken held the home team scoreless in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings. Pal had a one-out single in the 12th. Moon followed him up with his second round-tripper of the game for a 12-10 edge.
Trevor Hutto worked the final 4.2 innings to pick up the win. He struck out four while giving up just one run.
In the nightcap, Westerberg led the way with a pair of RBI.
The Pacers fell behind 2-0 in the third but battled back to tie the game after scoring a run in the fourth and fifth innings.
In the fourth, Moon singled with one down and moved to second on a walk to Parreira. With two down, Goings pulled a pitch through the left side, plating Moon.
USC Aiken had a chance to jump on top in the fifth, but managed to tie the game. Ammerman led off the stanza with a walk. With one down, Price singled. Then, with two down, Moon drew a base on balls. Another walk, this time to Parreira, made it 2-2.
The Pacers took the lead with two runs in the seventh. Mercado led off the inning with a walk. With one down, Westerberg blasted a shot over the left field wall for a 4-2 advantage. The lead, however, would not last long as the Saints scored four in the bottom of the frame. Flagler retired the next six batters to end the contest.
