USC Aiken Uses Late Rally To Thwart Florida Southern

Box Score

AIKEN, S.C. - A three-run homer by Nile Goings sparked the No. 13 University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team to a 4-2 win over No. 9 Florida Southern Saturday afternoon.

The Pacers are now 32-10 on the season while the Moccasins fall to 25-11 on the year.

Florida Southern jumped on top with an unearned run in the top of the first inning. The visitors looked to add another run, but a deep foul ball to Nile Goings marked the second out. Goings quickly threw a strike to Jonathan Banks at third base for inning-ending double play.

Head coach Kenny Thomas' team tried to even the contest in the bottom of the frame to no avail. Mitchell Price roped a one-out single to left field. With two down, Brian Parreira drew a base on balls. After the runners moved up 90 feet apiece on a passed ball, Chaz Pal was unable to bring anyone home, flying out to center field.

Zach Moon led off the second with a walk and Goings' single pushed him to second base with one down. However, back-to-back outs left the Pacers trailing 1-0.

USC Aiken had base runners in the third, fourth and fifth stanzas, but the squad could not score a run.

The Moccasins scored to make it 2-0 with a run in the top of the sixth. Thomas' team had a single in the bottom of the inning but the runner was left stranded.

The Pacers' bats got to work in the bottom of the eighth. After Banks earned a lead-off walk, Parreira garnered a base on balls. With one down, Moon ripped a single to left field, scoring Banks to make it a 2-1 contest.

Max Schoen lifted a fly ball to center field for the second out of the inning. Florida Southern made a pitching change and Goings promptly blasted a three-run homer for a 4-2 advantage.

The visitors had a runner on third base with one down in the top of the ninth. A fly ball to Luke Westerberg marked the second out of the inning. The runner tagged and tried to score, but Westerberg's throw went straight to Charles Padilla, who tagged the runner for the final out of the game.

Nick Jobst headed to the mound in relief of Joe Marlow to start the ninth inning and promptly registered his fifth save of the season.

Marlow started the game and worked eight strong innings. He struck out eight batters, giving up just one earned run on four hits and did not walk a batter. Marlow threw 99 pitches, including 68 strikes.

For the game, Skylar Mercado, Moon and Goings had two hits apiece. Goings drove in three runs with his moon shot.

The Pacers return to action tomorrow for the final game of the series. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. Live stats, video and audio will be available at PacerSports.com.
