Box Score AIKEN, S.C. - The No. 13 University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team notched a 4-0 victory over visiting No. 9 Florida Southern Friday evening.
The Pacers improve to 31-10 on the season while the Moccasins fall to 25-10.
Head coach Kenny Thomas' team plated three runs in the bottom of the first, which proved to be more than enough in the win.
With one down, Mitchell Price roped a single to center field before heading to second on Jonathan Banks' base hit. Brian Parreira loaded the bases with his infield single. After an out, Zach Moon laced a single to the opposite field, scoring Price and Banks. Parreira raced home on a wild pitch for a 3-0 margin.
Erik Davis continued his dominant game as he did not allow a hit through the first 5.1 innings. His no-hit bid came to an end with a single, but it did not phase Davis. Although the Moccasins loaded the bases in the sixth, Davis got out of the jam as he managed to force a weak grounder back to him, retiring the side.
USC Aiken increased its lead in the bottom of the seventh. Tyler Ammerman garnered a one-out double to left field. Skylar Mercado's single to right field put runners on the corner. Price laid down a sacrifice bunt, scoring Ammerman for a 4-0 edge.
With a four-run lead heading into the eighth stanza, Thomas went to the bullpen and brought in Connor Riley. Although the visitors managed to load the bags, Riley forced a foul-out and an infield fly ball to close out the inning.
Florida Southern tried to get on the board in the ninth, but Price made a spectacular catch to thwart what would have been at least a double.
For the game, Davis tossed seven innings, striking out nine while giving up just two hits en route to improving to 4-2 on the season. Riley closed the door on the visitors by registering a pair of shutout innings. He struck out a pair in his relief appearance.
At the plate, Moon led the way with a pair of hits and two RBI. Mercado and Parreira each had a pair of base hits. Price drove in a run and scored a run.
In all, USC Aiken pounded out four runs on 10 hits with one error while holding Florida Southern to no runs on two hits with one miscue.
