USC Aiken Splits With UNC Pembroke

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken softball team split a pair of games with UNC Pembroke Friday afternoon. The Pacers won 9-1 before falling 10-0.

The Pacers are now 27-17 overall and 11-11 against conference competition.

After a scoreless first two innings, head coach Jerry Snyder's team went to work in the third frame.

With one down, Sarah Montei hit a grounder up the middle. The pitcher deflected it to second base, but Montei beat the throw for an infield hit. As Sydney Murphy squared around to bunt, she was hit by a pitch, putting runners on first and second. Samantha Chubb promptly crushed a pitch high over the left center field wall for a 3-0 margin.

Although the Braves got on the board in the fourth with a run, Taylor Morgan continued her stellar game. She would shut the visitors down and then in the fifth, USC Aiken would strike again.

Murphy drew a walk and Chubb singled through the left side to put two runners on base. Magan Thrower laced a double to left field, scoring Murphy. With two down, a base on balls to Andrea Daring loaded the bags.

With two down, Lyndie Dorgan roped a shot into center field. The center fielder dove for the ball but was unable to make the play, allowing all three Pacers to trot home for a triple and a 7-1 advantage.

Morgan retired the side in order in the sixth and the Pacers managed to end the game early due to the mercy rule.

Montei led off the inning with a frozen rope to left field. With two down, Montei swiped second and hustled to third on a throwing error. Thrower quickly ended the game with a two-run shot over the fence in left center field.

For the game, Thrower pounded out three hits and was a triple away from the cycle. She drove in three runs and scored twice. Chubb had two hits and three RBI while crossing home two times. Montei had a pair of hits and scored twice while Murphy also accounted for two runs. Dorgan went one-for-three with three RBI. Daring had a hit and scored once.

Morgan tossed a complete-game two-hitter. She struck out seven and did not give up an earned run.

USC Aiken was unable to register a hit in the nightcap. The lone base runner in the game came via a base on balls to Thrower in the second inning.

The Pacers return to action Saturday at 1 p.m., when they host Georgia College. Live stats, video and audio will be available at PacerSports.com. Senior Day festivities will start prior to the doubleheader, so be there early to get a seat.
