Box Score AIKEN, S.C. - The No. 13 University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team lost a 6-2 decision to Newberry Wednesday evening.
The Pacers are now 30-10 on the season.
Head coach Kenny Thomas' team fell behind 2-0 after the first frame. However, the squad managed to cut the deficit to one by plating a run in the second stanza.
With one down, Nile Goings launched a solo homer to make it a 2-1 game.
The visitors scored a pair of runs in the third for a 4-1 edge.
USC Aiken threatened in the bottom half of the inning, but was unable to capitalize. Chaz Pal walked to lead off the frame and promptly swiped second base. Brian Parreira reached on an error. Pal moved to third on contact but was unable to score as the first baseman managed to get him out at the plate.
The Pacers trimmed the deficit to two, 4-2, with a run in the bottom of the fifth. David Lankster led off with a double to left field. He raced to third when Tyler Ammerman laid down a sacrifice bunt. With one down, Lankster scored on a grounder to the right side of the infield by Skylar Mercado.
Mercado stole second and Pal walked. Both tried to move up 90 feet, but Mercado was erased on the base paths. With two down, USC Aiken was unable to capitalize.
Thomas' team had runners on base in the sixth and seventh innings, but the team could not push across another run.
The Wolves scored a pair of runs in the ninth inning for the 6-2 final.
Goings and Mercado each drove in a run while Goings and Lankster each scored once.
James Lynch came on in relief and worked 4.2 innings. He gave up just two runs on three hits while striking out six batters. Cole Lee tossed the last four innings, earning one strikeout.
The Pacers return to action Friday evening when they host Florida Southern at 7 p.m.
