Box Score 2 ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - The University of South Carolina Aiken softball team needed a two-run homer in the eighth inning of game one and a four-run seventh inning in the second contest to sweep Flagler Wednesday evening. Game scores were 4-2 (8 innings) and 8-7.
The Pacers improve to 16-6 on the season and 4-0 against conference competition. The Saints fall to 16-13 overall and 1-5 against league foes.
In the opening game, head coach Jerry Snyder's team fell behind 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning but bounced back to take the lead in the fourth.
With one down, Taylor Morgan started things off by ripping a 1-1 pitch to left field for a double. Despite hustling to second base, she was able to take her time coming home when Magan Thrower launched a pitch over the wall for a two-run round-tripper, making the score 2-1.
USC Aiken had a chance to increase its lead in the sixth inning. With one away, Hannah Price doubled to left center field. Pinch running for Price, Samantha Peka hustled to third on a wild pitch. However, the next two batters struck out to end the stanza.
The Saints tied the contest in the bottom of the inning. Neither squad could push across a run in the seventh, sending the game into extra innings.
Sydney Murphy laced a double to the gap in left center field to lead off the eighth. Samantha Chubb followed her up by launching an opposite field homer, giving the Pacers a 4-2 advantage.
Morgan continued to do damage in the circle, retiring the final three batters in order after allowing a lead-off single in the bottom of the eighth.
For the game, Morgan registered a complete-game effort. She struck out nine batters while walking just one. She gave up two runs while scattering four hits.
Six of Snyder's team's eight hits went for extra bases. In addition to Chubb and Thrower recording homers, Murphy, Price, Morgan and Andrea Daring tallied doubles. Daring and Thrower each had two hits in the game.
In the nightcap, Sarah Montei started things off with a lead-off round-tripper for a 1-0 advantage. After a walk to Murphy, Chubb laid down a sacrifice bunt to push her to second base. Hannah Price's single pushed the score to 2-0 as Murphy trotted home.
With the score 2-1 in the top of the second, the Pacers added to their lead. Andrea Daring doubled and came home on Montei's single to right field. Leah Boghosian also scored on the play for a 4-1 margin.
The Saints took a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the third and tacked on a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth for a 7-4 advantage.
The score stayed the same until the top of the seventh stanza. Thrower led off the at bat with a single on a 3-2 pitch. Lyndie Dorgan came in as a pinch hitter and scampered to second base after Daring earned a walk.
Julieanne Leduc came in as a pinch hitter and Peka came in as a pinch runner for Daring. Leduc took one for the team as she was hit by a pitch on an 0-1 count to load the bags.
Lilly Shoaf was utilized as a pinch hitter and Sarah Timmerman re-entered the game for Leduc. Shoaf responded with a single in the gap, scoring Dorgan and Peka to make it a 7-6 contest.
Montei took her cue from the on-deck circle and stood in against the Flagler hurler. She ripped the first pitch she saw to right field, allowing Timmerman and Boghosian, who re-entered the game, to cross home for what turned out to be the game-winning run.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Saints had one person on base, but Morgan quickly got the first two batters out. After giving up a walk, she forced a fly ball to Boghosian for the final out of the game.
In the nightcap, Morgan worked four innings of relief and picked up the win. She struck out four and gave up just four hits and two runs while moving to 9-3 on the season.
Montei led everyone with three hits. She drove in four RBI while Lilly Shoaf plated a pair of runners.
