Box Score 2 AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team swept a pair of games against Georgia Southwestern Saturday afternoon in Peach Belt Conference action by scores of 10-1 and 10-2.
The Pacers are now 14-4 overall, including a 9-3 mark against league foes.
Leading the way for head coach Kenny Thomas' team was Max Schoen, who pounded out a game-high three RBI and scored twice. Jonathan Banks added three hits and two RBI while Skylar Mercado drove in a pair.
On the mound, Nick Yobbi was dominant, striking out seven batters while giving up just one run on six hits and only walking one. It marked the first complete game of his career as he improved to 3-0 on the season.
USC Aiken fell behind 1-0 in the top of the first, but tied it up when Schoen reached on an error that allowed Chaz Pal to score.
The Pacers took the lead in the second on Mercado's fielder's choice, which allowed Banks to race home, giving the team a 2-1 advantage.
Thomas' squad went back to work in the third when Schoen doubled home Zach Moon and Brian Parreira, who had reached on back-to-back singles. With one down, Banks singled home Schoen. Four batters later, Pal walked with the bags full, allowing Banks to trot home. After a pitching change, Parreira greeted him with a single, plating Charles Padilla for a 7-1 margin.
The fourth inning proved to be another formidable one for the Pacers. Schoen led off the inning with a double to left field and moved to third on Mitchell Price's bunt. Banks roped a single to left, scoring Schoen. With one down, Padilla lifted a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Price.
While Yobbi was dominant, USC Aiken did not need another run, but tacked on a score in the seventh. Banks was hit by a pitch and moved to second on Tyler Ammerman's single. Mercado doubled Banks in for what turned out to be the final run of the inning.
Yobbi was strong in the ninth, striking out the first two batters before forcing Davey King to lift a fly ball to left field for the final out of the game.
In the second contest, Schoen gave the Pacers a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first with a double to center field, scoring Pal and Parreira.
After the Hurricanes knotted the contest in the third, Thomas' team was quick to answer.
Moon singled to get things going and moved to second on Schoen's walk. Price beat out an infield single to load the bases.
Banks singled home Moon and Nile Goings followed him up with a single, scoring Schoen. Ammerman's grounder allowed Price to race home for a 5-2 margin.
USC Aiken increased its lead in the fifth when Goings launched a solo blast over the fence for a 6-2 advantage.
The Pacers piled it on in the bottom of the sixth as Schoen blasted a three-run round-tripper for a 9-2 margin. His hit allowed Parreira and Moon to cross home plate.
Price's single to left allowed Mercado to score in the seventh for the final run of the contest.
In the nightcap, Schoen pounded out four hits, including a homer, and drove in five runs. Price had three hits as did Goings, who drove in a pair of runs. Ammerman and Parreira tallied two hits apiece. Parreira, Moon and Schoen all drove in two runs apiece.
Joe Marlow worked six innings, striking out four en route to earning the win. Connor Riley tossed two scoreless frames while Nick Jobst worked a perfect ninth in the victory.
