Box Score 2 AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken softball team split a pair of games against region foe Carson-Newman Saturday afternoon. The team won the first game 4-0 before dropping the second contest 7-0.
The Pacers are now 14-6 on the season while the Eagles stand at 9-5.
In a scoreless contest, Leah Boghosian got things going for head coach Jerry Snyder's team with a well-placed bunt single to lead off the third inning. With one down, Boghosian swiped second base.
Sarah Montei worked the count and trotted to first on a walk. Brielle Jungblut waited patiently, earning a base on balls to load the bases for Samantha Chubb. With nowhere to put her, Chubb responded by blasting a grand slam over the left field wall for a 4-0 advantage. It marked the second straight game she blasted a four-run round-tripper over the wall.
USC Aiken threatened to add to its lead in the fifth stanza as Montei led off the frame with a single to center field. Jungblut beat out a bunt for a single, but a fielder's choice erased Montei. Hannah Price walked to load the bags, but another fielder's choice forced Jungblut out at home. A strikeout ended the threat.
Although Chubb's grand slam meant a lot to the offense, hurler Taylor Morgan registered one of the most dominant performances of her storied career. She did not allow a hit until the sixth inning. She gave up just two hits in the contest, including only one that barely made it out of the infield. Morgan struck out 11 batters and walked just two in the complete-game shutout.
In game two, USC Aiken struggled to get anyone on base, tallying three hits in the contest. Thrower, Sarah Timmerman and Morgan all posted base knocks in the loss.
Morgan blasted a double to right center field, giving the Pacers their most viable threat of the day.
Chandler Terrapin was saddled with the loss. Lyndie Dorgan worked two innings before Morgan came back in to throw the final three frames. She picked up where she left off, shutting out the Eagles. Morgan struck out five without allowing a hit over the final three stanzas.
The Pacers return to action Wednesday when they travel to Flagler for a doubleheader starting at 5 p.m. Live stats and video will be available at PacerSports.com.
