Box Score AIKEN, S.C. - The No. 7/13 University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team earned a 6-5 victory over visiting Montevallo Friday evening in a Peach Belt Conference clash on Max Schoen's walk-off hit.
The Pacers are now 24-5 overall, including a 15-4 record against league foes. The Falcons drop to 17-14 on the year and 9-7 against conference competition.
After falling behind 1-0 in the top of the first, head coach Kenny Thomas' team shut down Montevallo for the next five frames. During that time, USC Aiken plated four runs.
In the bottom of the third, the Pacers jumped on top with a three-run round-tripper by Brian Parreira. With one down, Tyler Ammerman doubled down the left field line. After the second out of the frame,Chaz Pal beat out an infield single to the shortstop, putting runners on the corners. Both were able to trot home when Parreira smashed a line-drive shot over the right field fence for the 3-1 advantage.
Mitchell Price roped a triple to the right center field gap to lead off the fourth. He came home when Jonathan Banks singled to left center for a 4-1 margin.
In the sixth, Banks drew a lead-off walk and moved to second on Luke Westerberg's sacrifice bunt. With two down, Skylar Mercado laced a single to left field and Banks slid home under the tag for a 5-1 lead.
Montevallo got back into the game with a pair of unearned runs in the seventh, making it 5-3. The Falcons tied the game in the eighth with a two-run single.
Nick Jobst gave up the tying run in the eighth, but managed to turn away the visitors, keeping it tied at 5-5. Although Montevallo put a runner in scoring position in the ninth, Jobst struck out a Falcon for the final out of the stanza.
With two on and two outs in the ninth, Schoen's opposite field single plated the game-winning run.
For the game, Price and Schoen notched two hits apiece while Parreira drove in three runs. Three of the Pacers' 11 base hits went for extra bases.
Erik Davis started the contest and pitched well. He notched six strikeouts and allowed just four hits. Davis gave up three runs, but all were unearned. Connor Riley tossed one inning, striking out one. Jobst worked two innings en route to improving to 3-0 on the season. He struck out four of the seven batters he faced. Jobst gave up one hit and walked one.
