Pacers Contain Nighthawks For Series Sweep

Box Score

AIKEN, S.C.With a dominant pitching performance and a red-hot offense, the No. 21 University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team garnered a 10-2 victory over visiting North Georgia, completing the series sweep.

The Pacers improve to 22-5 on the season, including 14-4 against league foes.

USC Aiken got things going in the bottom of the first inning, plating a pair of runs.

With one down, Chaz Pal ripped an opposite field double down the right field line. As Brian Parreira reached on an error by the first baseman, Pal, who had scampered to third, hustled home for a 1-0 edge. When the Nighthawks attempted to throw the ball home, the errant attempt allowed Parreira to move to second.

Zach Moon grounded out to first base while Parreira moved up 90 feet to third base. Although UNG was able to strike out Max Schoen, the catcher dropped the ball and Schoen motored to first safely. While the catcher was looking for the ball, Parreira made the 90-foot jaunt and slid home for a 2-0 margin.

After Joe Marlow retired the side rather easily in the second, head coach Kenny Thomas' squad added to its lead in the bottom of the frame.

Jonathan Banks drew a leadoff walk, but the next two batters were retired. Skylar Mercado got things going with a single to center field, putting runners on first and second. Pal doubled off the center field wall, plating a runner for a 3-0 advantage. Parreira sliced a shot into left field that curled away from the outfielder, allowing him to race to second base. His shot pushed Pal and Mercado across home plate for a 5-0 margin.

Jonathan Banks led off the third with a double down the left field line. When Tyler Ammerman stepped to the plate, he lined out to the shortstop. However, an errant throw while trying to pick off Banks allowed him to make a statement, giving the team a 6-0 lead.

The Pacers tacked on a dyad of runs in the fourth. Pal took one for the team as he was hit by a pitch. He advanced to third when Parreira ripped a single into the gap in right center field. A balk allowed both runners to move up a base. With two down, Mitchell Price singled as Parreira trotted home for an 8-0 lead.

In similar fashion, USC Aiken crossed home plate once again in the fifth inning.  Luke Westerberg led off with a single to left field and promptly moved to second on Ammerman's base knock. Although Mercado hit into a double play, Westerberg hustled to third before crossing home on Pal's shot to right field.

The visitors pushed across a run in the sixth, but the Pacers managed to get it back in the seventh when Parreira singled home Ammerman for a 10-1 advantage.

UNG added a run in the ninth, but it was not nearly enough in the 10-2 win.

Marlow started the game on the mound and was outstanding, throwing six innings of four-hit ball to earn the win. He gave up one run, which was unearned, while striking out six and walking just one.

James Lynch worked two solid innings of relief. He struck out two and gave up just one hit before giving way to Nick Jobst for the final inning.

For the game, Pal led everyone with a four-for-four performance. He also drove in two and crossed home three times. Parreira notched three hits, three RBI and scored a pair of runs.

Price had two hits and one RBI. Banks scored a pair of runs. Banks, Ammerman, Mercado and Westerberg each had a hit in the win while Schoen drove in one.

The Pacers return to action Wednesday when they host Paine at 6 p.m. Live stats, video and audio will be available at PacerSports.com.
