GREENWOOD, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken women's tennis team recorded a 7-2 road win at Lander Sunday afternoon in a Peach Belt Conference contest.
The Pacers are now 9-4 overall, including a 3-3 mark against conference competition. The Bearcats fall to 5-6 on the year, including a 1-6 mark against league foes.
Head coach Steve Dahm's team took a narrow 2-1 lead into singles play after a strong doubles performance.
Top-seeded Nadine Tusiama and Olivera Veskovac posted an 8-3 win. Third-seeded Kayla Calvert and Victoria Giannaccini gave the team a 2-1 lead with an 8-4 dismantling of their counterparts.
Tusiama improved to 2-0 on the day after claiming a 6-4, 6-4 win at the No. 1 singles position. Veskovac was pushed to extra points, but came out ahead in the three-set thriller. She won the first stanza 6-1 before falling 6-4 in the second set. However, she battled back to take the match by a 7-6 score.
Calvert went undefeated on the day after rallying from a set down to take the match. She dropped the first set 6-4, but finished off Anni Poikola by scores of 7-6, 6-4.
Giannaccinni played a three-set match and, like Calvert, fought back after losing the first set. She lost 6-1 in the opener before winning 6-2, 7-5, at the No. 4 slot.
Fifth-seeded Sarah Bernos made quick work of her opposition, winning by scores of 6-0, 6-0.
The Pacers return to action Tuesday when they host Alabama-Huntsville at 12 p.m.
