AIKEN, S.C. - The No. 12 University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team registered a 17-0 victory over Paine Wednesday evening in a non-conference contest.
The Pacers are now 12-3 on the season.
After a scoreless first inning head coach Kenny Thomas' team jumped on the board with four runs in the second.
Zach Moon doubled down the left field line to lead off the frame. He advanced to second when Max Schoen hit a soft single into left. Jonathan Banks' walk loaded the bags. Tyler Ammerman advanced to second on a miscue by the center fielder as two runs crossed home. Douglas Ard's sacrifice fly pushed it to 3-0. Ammerman, who was on third, scored on a wild pitch for a 4-0 advantage.
USC Aiken tacked on a run in the third stanza. Brian Parreira doubled to the gap in right center field and moved to third on a wild pitch. With one down, Banks reached on a miscue by the right fielder that plated Parreira.
Thomas' squad added to its lead in the fourth. Mitchell Price laced a single to right before advancing to third on an error. Skylar Mercardo roped a single to left, scoring Price for a 6-0 margin. Max Schoen's single to the gap allowed Mercado and Zach Moon to trot home for an 8-0 lead.
USC Aiken increased the margin to 17-0 after a nine-run fifth-inning. The big hits in the inning came when Schoen and Banks posted back-to-back doubles. Each Pacer batter drove in two runs with their hits. Chaz Pal's single to left scored the final run of the frame.
For the game, Schoen led Thomas' team with three hits and a game-high four RBI. He also scored a pair of runs. Mercado, Parreira and Ard had two base knocks each.
Mercado and Banks each drove in a pair of runs while Mercado, Parreira, Moon, Schoen, Banks, Tyler Ammerman and Ard all trotted across home plate twice.
Connor Riley worked the first three innings of the game. He struck out four while scattering two hits. He picked up the win. Hunter Hubbard struck out a pair of Lions in two frames. Jared Felix, Bryse Buster, Connor Norton and Blake Cantrell combined for the shutout. Norton struck out two batters while Cantrell retired one via the strikeout.
