USC Aiken Baseball Notes - Week 1

Box Score

Each week throughout the 2016 season, the sports information office will produce baseball notes.

Moon Launch In Aiken

Friday, Feb. 5, was the season-opening game of the 2016 baseball season. Junior Zach Moon registered a prolific outing, smashing a pair of round-trippers in the win over Lincoln Memorial. His homers accounted for four of the team's eight runs as both were two-run shots.

Coach T's Career Milestone

The season-opening victory was a great thing for the Pacers. It will also be remembered for being head coach Kenny Thomas' 1,100th career win. The legendary coach has a record of 1,101-548. Five hundred and eighty of those wins have come in his time as a Pacer.

Davis Is Dealing!

Erik Davis came in to pitch at the start of the fifth inning in the season-opening game against LMU. He went three innings and struck out six of the 12 batters he faced. Davis gave up one unearned run and did not walk a batter en route to picking up the victory.

Skylar's Solid Debut

Junior Skylar Mercado turned in an impressive debut as a Pacer. He went three-for-three in the field, including smacking a pair of doubles. Mercado crossed home once and chipped in a pair of putouts.

Pal Goes Solo

Chaz Pal had a solid game in the middle contest of the three-game series against the Railsplitters. He went three-for-three and launched a solo homer for the team's lone run of the game.

Comeback Kids

Trailing 4-0 heading into the seventh inning, head coach Kenny Thomas' team was relentless at the plate. The squad rattled off three runs in the bottom of the frame and then tied the contest in the ninth. The Pacers scored the game-winning run in the 10th in the come-from-behind win.

Max Is Schoen Them The Way

Down to their final out, Max Schoen blasted a solo homer for the Pacers, tying the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the ninth inning. He was solid in all facets of the game against the Railsplitters in the series finale. Schoen went two-for-two with a double, homer, drove in two and scored twice.

Last Time Out

Last season, USC Aiken squared off against Emmanuel and Armstrong State. The Pacers picked up a pair of wins over Emmanuel, including a 6-0 game on Apr. 23. The Pacers were swept by the Pirates last year in Savannah, Ga., falling in two straight one-run contests. USC Aiken dropped the series finale 11-9.

Against The Opponents

USC Aiken and Emmanuel squared off for the first time in each program's history last season and the Pacers lead the all-time series 2-0. USC Aiken picked up a pair of home victories in the series. The Pacers have dropped five in a row against Armstrong State and now trail in the all-time series 44-42-1.
