Box Score 2 AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken softball team split a pair of 1-0 contests to visiting Mount Olive Sunday afternoon in non-conference action.
The Pacers are now 12-4 on the young season.
In the first game, Hannah Price led the way for head coach Jerry Snyder's team with two of the team's five hits. Leah Boghosian, Samantha Chubb and Sarah Montei each had hits in the contest, with Chubb's going for a double.
Taylor Morgan went the distance against the Trojans, giving up a lone run in the seventh inning. She struck out seven and walked just one batter while scattering five hits.
In the third inning, head coach Jerry Snyder's team had a chance to take the lead. After Price led off with a single, Taylor Allen came in as a pinch runner. She moved to second on Magan Thrower's sacrifice bunt and scampered to third on a groundout by Sydney Murphy. However, a groundout to third by Sarah Timmerman ended the threat.
USC Aiken stranded a runner in the third and fourth innings, but really threatened in the sixth. With one down, Chubb belted her double down the line, but back-to-back outs ended the inning.
The Pacers had a chance in the seventh, but after Lilly Shoaf reached base, the team was unable to knot the score.
In the second game, Montei led everyone with three hits. Chubb, Price, Shoaf, Timmerman and Thrower all had hits in the game.
In the third inning, Montei singled to center field with one down. Timmerman's infield hit put runners at first and second, but a fly ball ended the stanza.
With one down in the bottom of the fourth, Thrower ripped a double down the line, putting Chandler Terrapin just 60 feet from home plate. However, back-to-back outs stymied the rally.
USC Aiken loaded the bases in the fifth, but a grounder to third ended the threat. However, the home team broke through in the sixth frame.
With two down, Andrea Daring walked. Samantha Peka came in as a pinch runner and moved to second on SHoaf's single to left field. Montei's bloop single into the gap in right center field allowed Peka to score what turned out to be the game-winning run.
Terrapin got the first batter of the inning to line-out before striking out the final two batters of the game for the win.
For the game, Terrapin struck out eight batters without allowing a walk while scattering five hits.
The Pacers return to action Thursday when they play a doubleheader at Claflin. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
