USC Aiken Falls In Overtime To Augusta

AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken men's basketball team lost an overtime contest to Augusta on Wednesday evening in the season finale for the Pacers by a 90-86 score.

The Pacers conclude the season at 6-20 overall and finish the year with a 4-15 conference record. The Jaguars end the regular season at 16-10 overall and 12-7 in league action.

Head coach Mark Vanderslice's team was led by Tavares Sledge's game-high 24 points. He also contributed six boards and a game-high six assists. Jevon Patton tallied 23 points on a seven-of-12 effort from the floor.

Arbry Butler accounted for 15 points, three assists and three blocks while Keith Belfield chipped in 15 points and five boards.

USC Aiken opened the game with a 7-4 lead as Belfield nailed a three-ball before Emu and Butler made back-to-back lay-ups.

The Pacers maintained a 15-10 edge, but fell behind on a shot at the 10:31 mark. Vanderslice's team was relentless throughout the opening stanza despite trailing 30-23.

USC Aiken pulled within four at the break as Sledge canned a free throw with 32 ticks on the clock.

The Pacers came out of the gate in a hurry in the second half, making it a two-point game after Patton nailed a three-pointer and Butler scored three points.

Vanderslice's team would stay close throughout, but still trailed by seven, 57-50, with 9:41 to play in the game.

USC Aiken mounted a comeback, closing the contest to 61-59. During the run, Patton made a lay-up and a jumper while Sledge hit a pair of jumpers. Belfield netted a free throw during the stretch.

With under a minute to play, Emu converted an old-fashioned three-point play for a 74-72 lead. The teams traded baskets, but the Jaguars' made a pair of three-pointers, for a 78-76 advantage.

USC Aiken went for the win, but Belfield missed a three-pointer. With the ball heading toward the three-point line, Emu grabbed it and nailed the game-tying shot with a second to play in regulation.

The Pacers fell behind 86-82 in the extra session, but pulled within two after a pair of Patton charity tosses. Trailing 87-84, Patton hit a jumper with 16 seconds to play.

The Jaguars made four free throws in the waning seconds to hold onto the lead.

For the game, USC Aiken drained 31-of-58 attempts from the floor (53.4 percent). The squad buried four-of-19 from the three-point line (21.1 percent) and made 20-of-31 from the charity stripe (64.5 percent).

The Pacers forced 16 turnovers and converted the miscues into 20 points. USC Aiken dominated the paint, accounting for 46 points.
