Box Score AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken women's basketball team lost an 81-69 overtime contest to Augusta
Wednesday evening in final game of the season.
The Pacers conclude the year
at 9-19 overall, including a 4-15 mark against conference competition. The Jaguars improve to 21-7 overall and 14-5 against league foes.
Leading the way for USC Aiken was
Carly Gilreath, who poured in a career-high 19 points on seven-of-12 shooting. She drained five-of-seven attempts from downtown in 28 minutes of work.
Alexis Ware contributed 16 points while
Mariah Durian concluded her career with 12 markers.
Stephanie Ball contributed a game-high six assists and game-best four thefts.
Katelyn Grisillo tallied an assist to beat the buzzer in the third period and a steal in her last collegiate contest.
Kassy Johannsen, the school's career block leader, registered four in her final game.
In the opening half, USC Aiken fell behind 16-6 heading into the second quarter, but head coach
Mike Brandt's team doubled up the visitors by netting 28 points to their 14 in the second 10 minutes of the contest.
Gilreath got things going with a three-pointer off a pass from
Kassy Johannsen, trimming the margin to seven, 16-9. Trailing 21-14, Gilreath connected on her third shot from downtown, making it 21-17 with
6:18 to play.
Although the deficit ballooned to eight at the
4:51 mark, Durian and Duff made back-to-back shots, pulling the team within four at 27-23.
After a Jaguar bucket and free throw, the Pacers reeled off 11 straight points. Durian got things started with a made basket, which was followed by a pair of free throws and a jumper from Ware.
Jasmine Coach then hit a jumper, before Ware drilled a three-pointer with five seconds left to take a 34-30 lead into the half.
Augusta outscored USC Aiken 19-14 in the third period.
Neither team got ahead by more than three in the fourth until the Pacers pulled ahead 62-58 on a
Carly Gilreath three.
USC Aiken extended its lead to 66-60 with
3:20 to play, but Augusta scored seven straight to go ahead 67-66 with less than a minute to play. Ball hit one of two free throws to send the game to overtime.
The Pacers were outscored 14-2 in overtime.
