Box Score AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team improved to 10-1 on the season and 6-0 against Peach Belt Conference competition with an 8-4 victory over Lander Sunday afternoon in the final game of the series.
The Bearcats fall to 8-5 overall and 3-3 against league foes.
Leading the way for head coach Kenny Thomas' team was Mitchell Price, who registered three hits, including a round-tripper. Zach Moon had a pair of hits, including a homer, while driving in three. Chaz Pal also smashed a homer and drove in three in the win.
Skylar Mercado and Price each crossed home twice.
Nick Yobbi worked five innings and picked up the victory. He struck out seven and allowed two earned runs while only walking one. Cole Lee struck out one batter while Nick Jobst struck out a pair of Bearcats.
Things got going in fine style for the Pacers as Mercado reached to lead off the first. He moved to second when Pal struck out and advanced to third on Brian Parreira's groundout. Moon launched a two-run homer for a 2-0 lead.
In the second, USC Aiken broke open the game with five runs. Tyler Ammerman walked and stole second with one away. Two batters later, Price doubled him home. After Mercado was hit by a pitch, Pal drilled a three-run round-tripper for a 6-0 edge.
The Pacers made it 7-0 when Moon doubled home Parreira, who had singled with two away to center field. Lander managed to get out of a bases loaded jam.
The visitors scratched two runs in the fifth and sixth innings before Thomas' team plated an insurance run in the bottom half of the sixth.
Price led off the inning by smashing a solo home run for what turned out to be the final run of the game.
USC Aiken's pitching shut down the opposition from that point forward, retiring the side in order in the seventh. Lander managed to get one runner on base in the eighth but Thomas' squad turned a double play to end the inning.
After allowing a lead-off single and a walk in the ninth, Jobst got the first out via a pick-off before striking out the next two batters to end the game.
The Pacers have a few days off before returning to the diamond Friday in their first road game of the season when they play at Georgia College at 3 p.m. Live stats will be available at PacerSports.com.
