Box Score 2 GAFFNEY, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken softball team split a doubleheader at Limestone Saturday afternoon in a non-conference match-up. Head coach Jerry Snyder's team won the opener 2-0 before falling 4-1 in the nightcap.
The Pacers are now 7-1 on the young season.
Taylor Morgan was dominant in the opener. She scattered just three hits and walked two batters while striking out 14 in the complete-game shutout.
With the game scoreless in the third frame, Sarah Montei roped a doubled into left center field, plating Leah Boghosian, who had reached on an error.
The Pacers were unable to add to the lead until Hannah Price smashed her second round-tripper of the season for a 2-0 edge in the sixth inning.
The runs were more than enough for Morgan. The Saints threatened in the bottom of the sixth as Morgan walked a pair of batters. With two down, she sent Erika Hansen back to the dugout after she swung and missed for the third strike.
Snyder's team had a pair of runners on base in the seventh, but Limestone forced a fly ball to end the threat.
Morgan returned to the circle and promptly retired the side in order, including striking out the final batter of the game, for the 2-0 victory.
For the game, Montei, Price, Sydney Murphy, Sarah Timmerman and Magan Thrower recorded hits. Montei and Price each drove in one while Boghosian and Price each scored.
In the nightcap, the Saints plated a run in the first inning, but the Pacers quickly countered.
In the top of the second, Chandler Terrapin doubled, scoring Andrea Daring to knot the contest at 1-1. However, Limestone would add an unearned run in the third and a pair of runs in the fifth for a 4-1 lead it would not relinquish.
USC Aiken had chances to cut into the deficit, but the squad was unable to bring anyone else across home plate.
For the game, Montei, Murphy and Terrapin each recorded hits. Terrapin drove in the lone run while Daring scored the team's only run.
Terrapin tossed a complete game, striking out one while giving up four runs on four hits, but only three runs were earned.
The Pacers return to action Sunday when they host Converse in a doubleheader slated to start at 1 p.m.
