Box Score 2 HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken softball team swept Coker Thursday afternoon in a non-conference doubleheader. Game scores were 2-1 in eight innings and 4-0.
The Pacers are now 6-0 on the season while the Cobras are 7-2-1.
In the opener, neither team could get on the board through the first two frames. It was not until Sarah Montei blasted a shot high over the left center field fence did the Pacers snag a 1-0 lead. The Cobras manufactured a run in the fourth, knotting the contest at 1-1.
Head coach Jerry Snyder's team threatened to regain the lead in the top of the fifth after Sarah Timmerman walked and was pushed to second on a sacrifice bunt by Magan Thrower. However, USC Aiken was unable to put anything else together, leaving the freshman stranded in scoring position.
The Cobras countered in their at bat in the same inning, but Morgan managed to overcome having runners on first and second with only one down. She induced a fly ball to Montei and a pop-up to Sydney Murphy for the final two outs of the frame.
With one down in the top of the sixth, Samantha Chubb launched a pitch to the gap in right center field for a double. Rookie Taylor Allen trotted onto the base as a pinch runner. After allowing a walk to Hannah Price, the Cobras took some time to talk to their hurler. USC Aiken inserted Lyndie Dorgan as a pinch runner, but the visitors were unable to push across another run at that time.
Snyder's team threatened in the seventh as Thrower registered a single up the middle with one away and advanced to second on a wild pitch. However, the next two went down on strikes, ending the stanza.
After Morgan retired the side in order in the bottom of the seventh, Boghosian was placed on second base to start the frame. Montei lifted a fly ball to right field, allowing Boghosian to hustle to third base. With two down, Hannah Price roped a single up the middle, allowing what turned out to be the game-winning run to cross home plate.
For the game, Price had a pair of hits and one RBI. Chubb, Montei and Thrower all had hits while Montei and Boghosian scored the Pacers' runs. Morgan was dominant in the victory. She struck out 11 batters and allowed one earned run on three hits while tossing a complete game. She walked just two batters and faced five over the minimum.
In the second game, Boghosian started things off with a walk and moved to second on a fielder's choice. With two down and Boghosian on third, Price ripped a single up the middle for a 1-0 edge.
Two innings later, Brielle Jungblut walked and swiped second. Jungblut jogged home after Montei laced a double to left field for a 2-0 advantage. Montei went to third on a fielder's choice and scored on Price's single to center field.
Snyder's squad went on the attack in the fifth with two down. Montei singled to center field and promptly raced 60 feet to the next base. Chubb strolled to the plate and ripped a single past the infield into center field, allowing Montei to score for what turned out to be the final run of the game.
For the contest, Montei led everyone with three hits. She also had one RBI and scored twice. Price posted a pair of hits and two RBI. Chubb, Andrea Daring and Chandler Terrapin each had a hit. Boghosian and Jungblut crossed home plate once apiece.
In the circle, Terrapin earned her second win of the year. She worked a complete game, striking out 11 while walking just four. She scattered four hits – and none went for extra bases.
