ANDERSON, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken women's tennis team defeated Anderson by an 8-1 score Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference contest.
The Pacers are now 4-1 on the young season.
Head coach Steve Dahm's team opened a 2-1 lead after doubles action.
The Pacers' tandem of Marie Habiyaremye and Sarah Bernos garnered an 8-3 win at the No. 2 position. Third-seeded Kayla Calvert and Victoria Giannaccini combined for an 8-4 win, helping the visitors take the 2-1 lead heading into singles action.
Dahm's team had three matches that went an extra set, but his team stayed strong and pulled out wins in each, sweeping the singles action.
Tusiama registered a 6-2, 6-2 victory at the No. 1 slot. Olivera Veskovac lost the first frame 7-5 at the No. 2 position, but battled back to take the win by scores of 6-4, 6-3.
Calvert, playing at the No. 3 spot, won the opening set 6-4, but lost the second stanza 6-4. She bounced back and reeled off a 6-0 victory in the third set to claim the win.
Giannaccini lost her first set 6-3 but managed to cruise to a 6-1, 6-1 victory at the No. 4 spot.
Habiyaremye tallied a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 5 while Bernos rounded out the team win with an 8-2 victory at the No. 6 position.
The Pacers return to action Saturday when they host Georgia Southwestern at 2:30 p.m.
