Pacers Drop Contest To Lions

AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken women's basketball team lost a hard fought 64-63 contest to Paine Tuesday evening.

The Pacers are now 4-4 on the season.

USC Aiken was led by a pair of freshmen in Kwajelin Farrar and Emily Waters. Farrar registered game-high accolades with 19 points and 13 rebounds in a mere 24 minutes of action. Waters nearly had a double-double with 11 points and nine boards.

Kate Duff accounted for nine points while Jasmine Coach accounted for seven. Carly Gilreath dished out a game-best five assists while Alexis Ware posted a team-best two steals.

After trailing by one entering the second stanza, head coach Mark Miller's team took the lead on a lay-up by Farrar at the 9:46 mark. She netted another basket off a pass from Gilreath nearly two minutes later for a 17-14 advantage.

The Lions pulled within one, but Jasmine Coach drained a pair of shots for a 23-16 lead. Duff's twisting lay-up pushed the score to 25-16 with 2:22 to play in the opening half. Paine managed to trim the deficit to six, 28-22, with 27 seconds to play before intermission.

USC Aiken extended its margin to 16 with 7:40 to play in the third quarter, but turnovers allowed the Lions to get back into the contest.

Miller's squad went back-and-forth with the visitors in the final period, but an old-fashioned three-point play gave the Lions a 64-63 lead with eight seconds to go. USC Aiken rushed down the court and worked the ball around, but a last-second three-pointer sailed just wide.

The Pacers held an eight-point lead at 56-48 with 5:32 to play when Aupont drained a three-ball off a pass from Gilreath, but a pair of charity shots with 2:47 to play gave the Lions a 57-56 advantage.

Miller's team countered with five straight points from Waters for a 61-57 edge, but three turnovers allowed the visitors to knot the score.

Farrar made a pair of free throws with 26 seconds to go for a two-point advantage, but after snagging a rebound, USC Aiken missed a pair of free throws. The Lions converted what turned out to be the game-winner with eight seconds to go.

For the game, USC Aiken held a 30-28 advantage in the paint. The squad out-rebounded the visitors 49-38 and tallied 17 assists on 22 field goals. However, 23 turnovers allowed the Lions to net 24 points. The Pacers forced 14 turnovers and scored 14 points off them.

The Pacers return to action Saturday when they travel to Young Harris for a game starting at 1:30 p.m. Live stats and video will be available at PacerSports.com.
