MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The University of South Carolina Aiken volleyball team saw its 18-match winning streak snapped with a 3-1 loss to Armstrong State in the PBC Semifinals Saturday afternoon.
The Pacers are now 28-4 on the season.
Head coach
Glenn Cox's team was led by senior
Taylor Stratton's double-double performance with 13 kills and 13 digs.
Julia Forster notched eight kills while
Shawn Hotson and
Kassy Johannsen had seven kills apiece.
Emily Teelon dished out 36 assists. Defensively,
Danielle Mercer led the way with a match-best 20 digs.
Rebecca Martinez added 13 while Teelon's 12 gave her a double-double. Hotson contributed 11 digs and a team-best three block assists.
After dropping the first set, USC Aiken played well in the second stanza. An error by the Pirates made it 3-2 in favor of the designated visitors. The miscue started a 5-0 run by the Pacers. Johannsen and Forster registered back-to-back kills before Hotson and Johannsen teamed up for back-to-back blocks and a 6-3 advantage.
Leading 7-5, Cox's group embarked on another 5-0 spurt. Johannsen started it with a kill before Martinez registered back-to-back aces. A miscue by ASU and a kill from Martinez pushed the score to 12-5, forcing a time-out.
Holding a 12-8 edge, an error gave the Pacers a 13-8 lead. Three straight attack errors by the visitors made it 16-8.
With the score 21-16 in favor of USC Aiken, a miscue by the Pirates and a kill from Teelon pushed the lead to seven, 23-16. Although the Pirates pulled within four, 23-19, Johannsen pounded home a kill. Stratton finished the set with a kill for the 25-20 victory.
The third frame was a back-and-forth affair until ASU scored four of the next five points after the score was tied at 12-12. The Pacers pulled within two, 22-20, but two straight kills by the visitors and an attack error by USC Aiken provided the Pirates with the 25-20 win.
Cox's team was unable to overcome the miscues in the fourth set, falling 25-21.
However, with the 78 digs, USC Aiken's 2016 team has 2,428 on the season, establishing a school record. The previous high was 2,373, which was set in 2006. The loss also snapped a Division II-era best 18-match winning streak.
The Pacers will find out their opponent in the NCAA Tournament Monday night at 7:30 p.m.
