MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The University of South Carolina Aiken volleyball team recorded a 3-0 victory at Georgia College Wednesday night in a Peach Belt Conference contest.
The Pacers improve to 18-3 overall, including a 7-2 mark against league foes. The Bobcats are now 10-7 overall and 3-4 against conference competition.
Christine Carroll led the way with a career and match-high 14 kills. She had just one miscue in 24 attempts en route to a .542 attack percentage. She also chipped in a pair of blocks.
Julia Forster and
Taylor Stratton notched 12 kills apiece. Stratton tallied a double-double by adding 11 digs. Her 41 attempts are the ninth most in a three-set match in school history.
Amber Hendry and
Kassy Johannsen added seven and six kills, respectively.
Emily Teelon dished out 45 assists, which is the sixth most in school history in a three-set match.
Danielle Mercer led everyone with a match-best 21 digs.
Shawn Hotson added 11 digs while
Rebecca Martinez chipped in 10.
At the net, Johannsen was in on a team-best three blocks.
After Johannsen slammed home a pass from Teelon in the first set to pull head coach
Glenn Cox's team within one at 12-11, the home team embarked on a 3-0 run for a 15-11 advantage. The Pacers battled back as Forster notched a kill. Hendry followed her up with back-to-back points. Forster's kill knotted the score at 15-15 and forced a time-out.
Stratton pulled USC Aiken within one at 22-21, but the Bobcats answered with two straight points. After a time-out by Cox, the Pacers forced Georgia College into an attack error. Hendry and Stratton found the court, tying the contest at 24-24. After the teams traded the next two points, Stratton and Hendry pounded home back-to-back points for the 27-25 victory.
Leading 7-6 in the second set, USC Aiken broke open the frame with a 10-1 run. During the spurt, Carroll had three kills and a block. A few points later, Forster's kill made it 21-11. She added another to make it 22-12. An attack error by the Bobcats made it 23-12. Carroll closed the cage by notching the final two points for the Pacers in the 25-15 win.
USC Aiken trailed the third stanza 6-2 but managed to take a 9-8 lead thanks to a 5-0 spurt. During the run, Stratton and Johannsen each had a kill while Teelon served up an ace. Tied at 13, Forster started another run by the visitors. After the spurt was complete, Cox's team held a 19-13 edge.
However, Georgia College fought hard and managed to take a 22-21 lead before Stratton tied it with a kill. With the score tied at 23, Stratton smashed the pass from Teelon for a one-point advantage. Forster and Johannsen combined to block an attempt for the 25-23 victory.
Collectively, USC Aiken's 53 kills are tied for 10
th most in a three-set match in school history. The 147 attempts are fourth on the list while the 50 combined assists are sixth on the list.
