AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken women's tennis team registered a 9-0 victory over visiting Clark Atlanta Sunday afternoon in the season-opening match.
The Pacers, 1-0, gained an early advantage as the visitors had just five players on the roster, giving head coach Steve Dahm's team a 2-0 advantage before starting the match.
USC Aiken's tandem of Olivera Veskovac and Nadine Tusiama teamed up for the No. 1 doubles spot and did not disappoint. The team posted an 8-6 victory over its counterparts.
Sarah Bernos and Mariah Aimee Habiyaremye were paired up at the No. 2 slot. The dyad garnered an 8-4 victory. Kayla Calvert and Victoria Giannaccini were credited with the win via default at the No. 3 doubles position.
In singles action, Veskovac needed some extra time, but managed to pick up a win at the top spot, 7-5, 6-4. Tusiama moved to 2-0 on the day with a near-flawless performance, garnering a win by scores of 6-0, 6-1.
Calvert tallied a 6-2 victory in the opening set at No. 3 before wrapping up the match with a 6-0 win in the second set.
Giannaccini and Habiyaremye played at the No. 4 and No. 5 positions, respectively. They each won by identical scores of 6-0, 6-2.
Marta Quereda won by default at the No. 6 spot for the sweep.
It marked the third time in the last four seasons that USC Aiken has started out the year with a 9-0 victory.
USC Aiken hits the road for a match at Erskine on Thursday, Feb. 4. The match is slated to start at 2:30 p.m.
