Box Score AMERICUS, Ga. – The University of South Carolina Aiken women's basketball team recorded yet another fourth-quarter comeback in the 66-59 victory at Georgia Southwestern in a Peach Belt Conference contest Saturday evening.
The Pacers improve to 8-9 overall and 3-5 against conference competition. The Hurricanes fall to 7-8 on the year and 1-7 against league foes.
Head coach Mike Brandt's team was led by rookie Aubrey Lukacsko's career-high 18 points in a mere 13 minutes of work off the bench. She canned four-of-seven shots from the three-point stripe and buried all six charity tosses down the stretch. For good measure, she registered a game-high three steals.
Stephanie Ball contributed 14 points while Mariah Durian netted 12. Rachelle Aupont chipped in nine points and a team-high 10 boards while Kassy Johannsen tallied seven points and six blocks. Jasmine Coach cleaned up the glass with nine rebounds.
Tied at 10 with 3:42 to play in the first frame, Durian connected on a jumper at the 3:13 mark and Alexis Ware drained one of her three-point baskets 47 seconds later for a 15-10 edge. The Hurricanes, however, reeled off seven of the next nine points, tying the game at 17 apiece going into the second quarter.
Ball's three-pointer gave the Pacers a 27-26 margin at the 3:52 mark, but USC Aiken was outscored 6-0 to end the half.
In the third frame, Brandt's team trailed by six before Ball rattled off five straight points, pulling the Pacers within one at 33-32 with 7:51 left. USC Aiken could get no closer in the stanza and trailed by as many as eight before the team got things going.
Aupont converted a twisting lay-up, making it a 42-36 game at the 2:15 mark. Durian took a pass from Aupont and calmly connected on a jumper, slicing the deficit to four. With 19 seconds to go in the third quarter, Coach found Ware for a lay-up. She connected on a free throw for an old-fashioned three-point play, but the Hurricanes held a 44-41 lead going into the fourth frame.
USC Aiken was hot to start the final period, scoring the first eight points to take a 49-44 advantage. During the run, Johannsen and Durian each hit free throws. Lukacsko nailed two charity tosses and a three-pointer for the five-point advantage.
Brandt's team would trail 51-50 before Lukacsko hit another shot from behind the three-point stripe for a two-point lead at the 4:03 mark. The shot sparked a 16-8 run to end the game for USC Aiken. The Hurricanes pulled within one on two occasions, but the visitors outscored the home team 6-0 over the final 1:18 to secure the win.
For the game, USC Aiken hit 22-of-61 shots from the floor (36.1 percent) compared to 20-of-73 from the field for the home team (27.4 percent). Brandt's squad connected on eight three-point baskets compared to six by the Hurricanes. The visitors held an astounding 45-17 margin in bench points. In the contest, there were six ties and seven lead changes.
