Box Score 2 SAVANNAH, Ga. – The University of South Carolina Aiken volleyball team rattled off a pair of 3-0 victories Saturday over Tusculum and Brevard.
The Pacers are now 3-0 after sweeping all of their opponents at Armstrong State's season-opening tournament.
In the opening match of the day, the hot-hitting Pacers registered a .325 attack percentage en route to the sweep of Tusculum. During the sensational second set, head coach Glenn Cox's team hammered home 14 kills and did not commit an error while hitting .519.
Ashley Diedrich led everyone with 13 kills. She contributed 10 digs for her second consecutive double-double performance. Alicia Hines contributed nine kills against just one error while hitting .471. Julia Forster, Taylor Stratton and Emily Teelon each posted seven kills while Ashley Lind led the squad with a .556 attack percentage.
Teelon distributed 31 assists, added three aces and chipped in four digs.
Defensively, Monica Cardona posted a match-best 20 digs. Katie Toman added nine. At the net, Diedrich and Hines had two block assists apiece.
In the opening set, USC Aiken trailed 9-7, but a kill from Hines pulled the team within one. Hines and Diedrich stuffed Sarah Bouley, knotting the score. Diedrich smashed two straight passes for an 11-9 edge.
The Pioneers tied it at 16, but Cox's group embarked on a 9-3 run to end the match. During the spurt, Diedrich had a pair of kills and an ace while Forster's slam completed the first-set win.
The second set was close until the midway point. Leading 14-13, Lind and Forster blocked a shot and an attack error by the designated home team made it 16-13. An ace by Diedrich forced a time-out.
Upon returning from the break, Diedrich, Stratton and Teelon all had kills while Shawn Hotson's ace wrapped up the set.
USC Aiken found itself trailing 22-19 in the third set, but Hines took a pass from Stratton and found a spot on the floor for a point. Teelon dropped back to the service line and registered two straight aces, knotting the contest at 22. Diedrich and Hines stuffed a shot, giving the Pacers a one-point edge. After an attack error by Tusculum, Stratton's attack ended the match with the 25-22 victory.
In the second match of the day, USC Aiken posted a sweep of Brevard by scores of 25-18, 25-23 and 25-12.
Diedrich led the way with 11 kills. Stratton added eight and Forster chipped in six while the team had a balanced attack. The offense posted a .266 attack percentage on 40 kills against just 11 errors.
Teelon garnered 23 assists and seven digs. Defensively, Toman tallied 22 digs, which marked the eighth-most for USC Aiken in a three-set match since the inception of rally scoring. Diedrich had a team-best four block assists while Hines added three.
In the first set, the Pacers jumped out to a 14-2 lead as the squad clicked on all cylinders. Diedrich had a pair of kills while Monica Cardona sliced the defense with an ace.
Brevard pulled within three at 17-14, but Cox's group held the designated visitors at bay. Down the stretch, Stratton, Hines and Diedrich all had aces.
The second set saw Cox substitute freely as the entire team had played by the end of the stanza. Jennifer Law, Okwunne Ogbogu and Chelsey Watts all saw their first collegiate playing time.
USC Aiken led 9-7 before it extended the lead behind a pair of kills from Hines. Shawn Hotson got into the mix, slamming down a pass from Teelon to make it 16-11. The Pacers' last two points of the set came via miscues by Brevard.
Forster and Diedrich's block in the third frame made it 8-2 and USC Aiken would easily extend the margin to as many as 14 at 23-9. On that play, Toman's pass found Diedrich, who hammered home the ball for the kill. Diedrich and Ogbogu combined for a block to make it 24-11 before Forster's kill completed the win.
The Pacers return to action next weekend when they host the USC Aiken Invitational. The squad plays a pair of matches on Friday, Sept. 11. The Pacers host Nova Southeastern at 3 p.m., and Palm Beach Atlantic at 7 p.m.
