Box Score AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team lost an 8-6 decision to Catawba on Senior Day.
The Pacers conclude the regular season with a 33-16 mark.
Leading the way for head coach Kenny Thomas' team was Sean Miller, who went three-for-four with one RBI. Ty Barkell wrapped out two hits and drove in one. Kody Belcher, TJ Costen, Randy Luckett, Tyler Moore and Chaz Pal all had a hit. Belcher, Costen, Moore and Pal each had one RBI. Costen, Moore and Luckett each scored twice.
Ben Black worked six innings but did not get a decision. He struck out four and allowed just two earned runs. Sam Daniel took the loss. Erik Davis, Cole Lee, Joe Marlow, Jared Felix and Nick Yobbi all saw time on the mound for USC Aiken.
The Pacers trailed 2-0 heading into the bottom of the first, but battled back. Kody Belcher led off with a single but was erased on a fielder's choice by Costen, who eventually went to third on an error by the pitcher. Pal's groundout plated Costen, making it a 2-1 contest.
The Indians answered back with a run of their own in the second, but USC Aiken knotted the contest in the bottom of the third. Belcher reached on a fielder's choice as Moore scored. Luckett crossed home with an unearned run when there was an error by the shortstop on the play.
In the fifth, Costen walked and swiped second to lead things off. On Pal's groundout, he advanced to third before coming home on Barkell's single to left field for a 4-3 edge.
USC Aiken added a run in the sixth when Costen lifted a fly ball that was deep enough, allowing Luckett to cross home plate. Luckett had singled to left with nobody out earlier in the frame.
Catawba struck back with a run in the seventh, but USC Aiken collected one RBI in the bottom of the stanza when Miller laced a single to right, plating Moore.
The Indians plated three runs in the eighth, taking a 7-6 lead, before adding a run in the ninth for an 8-6 score.
Thomas' squad tried to answer in the bottom of the ninth as Costen led off with a double to center field. However, he was left stranded with the tying run at the plate.
The Pacers return to action next weekend at Columbus State for the Peach Belt Conference Tournament. Game times and opponents will be announced Sunday evening.
