AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken men's tennis team lost a 7-2 decision to No. 20 Georgia College Friday afternoon in Peach Belt Conference competition.
The Pacers are now 7-8 on the season and 2-6 against league foes.
Head coach Steve Dahm's team fell behind 3-0 after doubles competition, but it was closer than the score indicated. Top-seeded Andy Quirk and Mathias Degardin pushed their opponents to a 9-7 contest while second-seeded Alejandro Andino and Julien Tan fell just short in an 8-6 match.
Quirk managed to get a victory at the No. 3 slot in singles action. He won the first set 6-3 before falling 6-4 in the second frame. However, he battled back to take the match by a 10-7 score. Degardin garnered the team's other win, which came at the No. 4 position. He lost the first set 6-2, but was ahead 4-3 in the second frame when Pedro Ecenarro retired, giving Degardin the win.
The overall score was much closer than the scoreboard had it. Clement Raymond played a three-set match at the No. 5 slot while Andino forced extra points in his battle at the No. 6 position.
The Pacers return to action Apr. 9 when they host Anderson in a match slated to start at 3 p.m.
