USC Aiken Sweeps GRU Augusta

AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team completed its three-game sweep of visiting GRU Augusta with a 10-4 victory Sunday afternoon.

The Pacers improve to 27-13 on the season, including a 16-11 mark against conference opponents.

Douglas Ard and Sean Miller each accounted for four hits. Chaz Pal tallied two hits while Cory Bryant, TJ Costen, Randy Luckett, Zach Moon and Rob Youngblood all had one hit apiece.

Ard, Luckett and Pal drove in two runs apiece while Bryant, Miller and Moon each had one RBI.

Joe Marlow came in during the sixth inning and completed the game, registering the win (3-0). He struck out three and gave up just two hits after coming in for Trevor Hutto.

For the third straight game, head coach Kenny Thomas' team scored in the first frame. With one down, Miller doubled down the right field line and scored on Pal's single to center field. After moving to third on two wild pitches, Pal crossed home for a 2-0 edge when Moon singled to left field.

The Pacers increased their lead to 3-0 in the third. Kody Belcher was hit by a pitch and eventually scored on Pal's single.

GRU Augusta battled back, taking a 4-3 lead after scoring four runs in the top of the sixth. However, the Pacers battled back, knotting the contest in the bottom of the stanza.

Ard led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Bryant. Youngblood singled to third base, allowing Ard to move to third. With two down, USC Aiken converted a double steal as Ard swiped home for what turned out to be the game-winning run.

Thomas' squad broke open the game in the bottom of the seventh. Luckett's double down the line scored Costen and Moon. Luckett swiped third and scored on Ard's single. Bryant singled to left and moved to second on an error while Ard scored on the play. Miller capped off the scoring in the inning with a base hit to right, plating Bryant.

The Pacers completed the scoring when Ard singled home Costen in the bottom of the eighth. Costen had reached on a fielder's choice before stealing second and third.

For the game, USC Aiken totaled 10 runs on 15 hits with two errors while the Jaguars had four runs on 11 hits and two miscues.
