Pacers Sweep Hurricanes

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken softball team registered a pair of victories against Georgia Southwestern Sunday afternoon, winning 11-3 in five innings and 1-0 in the nightcap.

The Pacers are now 17-5 on the season and 8-2 against Peach Belt Conference competition.

USC Aiken trailed 1-0 in the opener before plating a pair of runs in the second inning.

Andrea Daring got things going in the second with a lead-off single. Dani Reeves came in as a pinch runner but was erased when Magan Thrower's bloop single to right field forced Reeves to wait at first base before seeing if it would be caught.

With one down, Taylor Mogan walked, pushing Thrower to second. After a strikeout, Sydney Murphy singled to load the bases. Sarah Montei roped a double to right center field, plating Thrower and Morgan.

After Georgia Southwestern tied the game in the third, head coach Jerry Snyder's team answered quickly with two runs in the bottom of the stanza. With one away, Victoria Burkett singled and was able to trot home after Daring smashed a two-run round-tripper over the center field fence.

Leading 4-2 in the fourth, Montei singled. Samantha Chubb laid down a sacrifice bunt. As Montei was nearing second base, she realized nobody was at third base and she promptly moved up an extra 60 feet. After a walk to Ashley Metts, Burkett roped a single to left field that plated Montei. Daring walked and Thrower lifted a sacrifice fly into center field, allowing Metts to score.

A passed ball and a walk loaded the bags for Makenzie Barbor, who walked in Burkett for a 7-2 edge.

The Hurricanes threatened in the fifth, but scored just once, making it 7-3. In the bottom of the inning, Montei walked and Chubb was hit by a pitch. After a pitching change, Metts drew a base on balls to load the bases.

A passed ball pushed Montei across home plate. With one down, Daring launched her second homer of the game, driving in three and ending the contest due to the mercy rule.

For the game, Daring smashed three hits, including a pair of homers, to go along with four RBI and scoring twice. Burkett and Montei each had two hits. Montei drove in two runs while Burkett, Barbor and Thrower all drove in one apiece. Burkett, Metts and Montei joined Daring as scoring two runs each while Chubb, Morgan and Thrower all scored once.

Morgan went the distance in the circle to get the victory. She struck out five batters and gave up eight hits, but only two earned runs.

In the second game, each pitcher performed well. Neither team got much going on offense as both ended the contest with just four hits.

With no score in the bottom of the sixth, Thrower lifted a pitch just over the left field wall for a solo homer and a 1-0 lead.

In the seventh, the Hurricanes got a runner on first base but a sacrifice bunt was well played by Thrower, who picked up the ball and rocketed it to Metts, getting the lead runner. With one down, Danielle Payne went to work, striking out the next two batters swinging to end the game.

Barbor led the way with two hits. Burkett added one while Thrower's solo blast marked the lone run of the game.

In the circle, Payne struck out five batters and gave up just four hits. She did not allow a run or a walk in the victory.

The Pacers return to action Tuesday when they travel to Claflin for a doubleheader slated to begin at 4 p.m.
