Box Score MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team lost a 14-10 decision at Montevallo Sunday afternoon.
The Pacers are now 21-11 on the season, including an 11-10 record against league foes. The Falcons are 15-15 overall and 9-9 against conference competition.
Between the two schools, five home runs were hit, including a pair by head coach Kenny Thomas' team.
Trevor Hutto suffered the loss as he surrendered 10 runs on nine hits in 3.1 innings. Seven of the runs were earned. Erik Davis pitched two-thirds of an inning while Joe Marlow tossed 2.2 innings. Jared Felix faced a batter and Sam Daniel worked 1.1 innings.
For the game, Chaz Pal accounted for three hits and two RBI. Matt Bosse totaled two hits and two RBI. Tyler Moore and Rob Youngblood each had a pair of hits. Kody Belcher, Cory Bryant and Zach Moon all had one hit apiece.
Pal scored a team-high three runs while Moore was plated twice. TJ Costen, Douglas Ard, Bryant, Moon and Youngblood all scored once.
USC Aiken trailed 3-0 heading into the second, but answered with a two-run blast by Youngblood, scoring Ard on the play. Ard had reached on a two-out error, keeping the inning alive.
Down 6-2 in the third, Thomas' team battled back to pull within one. Costen reached on an error to start things off and moved to second on a single by Moore. Pal's single up the middle allowed Costen to race home. With two down, Bosse ripped a single into the outfield, plating Pal and Moore on the play.
The Falcons broke open the game in the fourth, scoring five runs for an 11-5 advantage. The teams traded runs in the fifth, seventh and eighth innings but the Pacers managed just two runs in the ninth as the rally came up short.
Pal scored the Pacers' run in the fifth with a solo shot to right center field with one away. In the seventh, Sean Miller's groundout allowed Moore to score. Moore had reached on an error and moved to third on Pal's double.
Bryant scored on a fielder's choice in the eighth. After coming in as a pinch hitter, Bryant ripped a double down the right field line before scampering to third on Youngblood's single.
Pal started things off with a walk in the ninth inning. He quickly moved to second when Moon singled through the right side of the infield. After each player moved up a base on a groundout, Bosse beat out an infield single, scoring Pal. Max Schoen's groundout plated Moon, but a groundout ended USC Aiken's rally.
For the game, USC Aiken accounted for 10 runs on 12 hits with five errors while the Falcons had 14 runs on 14 hits with three miscues.
