USC Aiken Knocks Off Newberry, 5-1

Box Score

AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken cruised to a 5-1 victory over Newberry Wednesday afternoon.

The Pacers improve to 19-7 on the season while the Wolves fall to 14-13.

Erik Davis picked up the victory for head coach Kenny Thomas' team. He worked two innings of middle relief. Davis gave up one run on two hits and struck out one.

Leading the way for the offense was Matt Bosse, who delivered a fourth-inning two-run round-tripper. Zach Moon and Chaz Pal each had two hits and one RBI apiece. Bosse, TJ Costen and Tyler Moore all crossed home plate once apiece while Kody Belcher scored a pair of runs.

With no score heading into the fourth inning, USC Aiken got things going. Costen led off the frame with a single to right. Moon ripped a double down the left field line, allowing Costen to scamper to third. Pal hit a deep fly ball that allowed Costen to trot home on the sacrifice fly.

Belcher reached on a fielder's choice, but it erased Moon from the base paths. Bosse walked to the plate and smashed an opposite field homer, pushing the advantage to 3-0 in favor of the home team.

The Wolves pushed across a run in the top of the fifth, but the Pacers managed to quell any more thoughts of a comeback.

USC Aiken went to work in the bottom of the sixth. With one out in the sixth, Belcher swiped third, putting runners on first and third when Douglas Ard walked. The duo combined for a double steal as Belcher slid home before the tag was applied for a 4-1 lead.

Thomas' team added a run in the seventh stanza. With one down, Tyler Moore roped a single down the left field line. After moving to second on a sacrifice bunt and racing to third on a passed ball, Moore crossed home plate when Moon singled for the 5-1 score.

Joe Marlow started the game and worked four innings. He gave up just four hits and struck out two batters. Jared Felix worked a scoreless seventh while Nick Yobbi struck out four players in two innings of scoreless ball.

The Pacers return to action Saturday when they play a doubleheader at North Georgia starting at 1 p.m.
