Box Score 2 AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken softball team posted a pair of 3-0 victories over Pfeiffer Sunday afternoon.
The Pacers are now 9-1 on the young season.
Taylor Morgan was spectacular in the first game. She registered a four-hit shutout while baffling the Pfeiffer batters all game long. She struck out six while only walking three. Her victory pushes her record to 4-1 on the season.
At the plate, Samantha Chubb led the way with a game-high two hits, including one for extra bases. She drove in a run as did Victoria Burkett. Chubb and Magan Thrower each crossed home once as did Sydney Murphy.
Morgan retired the Falcons with ease through the first four frames. In the bottom of the fourth, USC Aiken's bats came alive. Chubb led off the inning with a shot off the fence in right center for a double. Ashley Metts sent a long shot to deep center that was caught. However, she was able to push Chubb to third on the play. After Thrower was hit by a pitch, Andrea Daring reached first on a throwing error, sending her to second and Thrower to third. Chubb was able to score on the play.
Leading 1-0, Burkett blasted a sacrifice fly to the center fielder, plating Thrower for a two-run advantage.
Chubb gave the Pacers a 3-0 margin in the bottom of the fifth when she laced a single to right, plating Murphy. Murphy had singled and went to second on a groundout.
The Falcons tried to mount a comeback in the seventh, but with runners on first and second, Morgan forced a fly ball to end the game.
For the game, USC Aiken accounted for three runs on five hits with no errors while the Falcons had four hits and committed one error.
USC Aiken jumped on top in the first inning of the second contest. Murphy singled and moved to second when Montei walked. Murphy scampered to third on Chubb's fly ball and crossed home when Metts sent a deep fly ball to left field.
The Pacers went ahead 2-0 in the third stanza when Murphy led off with another single. Two batters later, she crossed home when Chubb blasted a single into the outfield. In the sixth, Chubb launched a double down the left field line. She moved to third on a groundout before coming home on an errant throw to third base.
Danielle Payne continued her dominance, improving to 5-0 on the season with a complete-game shutout. She hurled seven innings, striking out eight while walking just two. Payne gave up just two hits and faced just 23 batters in the game.
For the game, Murphy led the way with three hits while scoring twice. Chubb garnered two hits while driving in one and scoring once. Metts drove in a run as well.
The Pacers return to action Tuesday when they play at Carson-Newman. First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 1 p.m.
