Box Score AIKEN, S.C. – The No. 14 University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team suffered its first loss of the season, falling 11-4 to Florida Tech Monday afternoon.
The Pacers are now 6-1 on the season while the Panthers improve to 5-0.
Head coach Kenny Thomas' team found itself trailing 2-0 in the fourth inning before his squad broke through. Sean Miller doubled to left to get things going and he moved to third on Tyler Moore's grounder. Ty Barkell plated Miller, making it a 2-1 contest. Barkell swiped second and moved to third on a grounder, but the Pacers were unable to even the game.
Florida Tech broke the game open with six runs in the fifth inning for an 8-1 advantage. However, the Pacers scratched a run across in the bottom half of the stanza.
With two down, Kody Belcher singled to center and moved to third on Miller's single up the middle. Moore singled home Belcher, but a pop fly ended the threat with two runners on base.
The Panthers tacked on a run in the sixth and seventh innings for a 10-2 lead. In the bottom half of the seventh, Miller reached on a fielder's choice. With two down, Barkell smashed a deep homer over the left field wall, making it 9-4.
The visitors tacked on a run in the top of the ninth for the 11-4 final.
For the game, Barkell, Belcher, Bosse and Miller had two hits apiece. Barkell drove in three while scoring one and Miller crossed home twice.
Matt Hissong took the loss after throwing 4.2 innings. He gave up four runs on six hits but struck out four and walked three.
The game was originally slated for 2 p.m., but was moved up due to the weather. In the sixth inning, rain and lightening forced a delay before the teams could take the field again.
The Pacers return to action Saturday in doubleheader action at Armstrong State. The first game is slated for 11 a.m., with the second game to follow at 2 p.m.
