Box Score AIKEN, S.C. - The No. 14 University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team wrapped up its second consecutive sweep of the season, dispatching Trevecca Nazarene by a score of 17-5 Sunday afternoon.
The Pacers improve to 6-0 on the young season while the Trojans fall to 0-3.
Tyler Moore led the way with a four-hit performance. He accounted for three RBI and scored three. Ty Barkell registered three hits and scored three times. TJ Costen accounted for three hits, drove in four and scored three times. Douglas Ard notched three hits, four RBI and scored once. Matt Bosse totaled two hits, two RBI and scored twice while Chaz Pal had two hits, three RBI and scored once. Sean Miller wrapped out a pair of hits and scored three times.
Costen had a pair of extra base hits (double, triple) while Moore and Ard both garnered homers.
Head coach Kenny Thomas' team jumped on the board with three runs in the first inning. Kody Belcher was hit by a pitch and moved to second on Miller's single to left. Moore quickly brought him home as he singled to left. Barkell's infield single loaded the bags for Costen, who garnered a sacrifice fly for the team's second score of the inning. Two batters later, Pal posted another sacrifice fly for a 3-0 edge.
TNU battled back, evening the contest at 3-3 in the third inning. However, USC Aiken scored four runs in the bottom half of the frame and never looked back.
Moore led off with a single and promptly swiped second. The Pacers loaded the bases two batters later on a bunt single by Costen. Bosse singled home a pair of runners. Pal plated Costen with a hard-hit single to left field. Ard promptly followed Pal with an RBI single of his own for the 7-3 advantage.
Moore opened the scoring in the fourth when he launched a two-run homer for a 9-3 lead. Two batters later, Costen doubled home Barkell, who had reached on a single. With one down, Costen crossed home, making it 11-3.
With one down in the fifth, Costen tripled home Miller and Barkell. Pal registered an RBI single, scoring Costen with two away. Ard quickly launched a ball that hit the top of the fence before bouncing over for a two-run round-tripper for a 16-3 advantage.
Ard continued his solid day, ripping a single to center in the seventh frame that allowed Bosse to score.
The Trojans launched a two-run homer in the eighth, closing the gap to 17-5.
Trevor Hutto earned the victory after tossing five innings of four-hit ball. He struck out six and walked one while giving up three earned runs. Nick Yobbi struck out two while hurling a perfect inning. Connor Norton worked a scoreless seventh. Hunter Hubbard threw a scoreless ninth frame while striking out two.
For the game, USC Aiken accounted for 17 runs on 21 hits while TNU total five runs on five hits with four errors.
The Pacers return to action tomorrow when they host Florida Tech in a contest slated to start at 2 p.m.
