Box Score AIKEN, S.C. - After trailing for much of the game, the No. 14 University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team plated runs in its last four at bats en route to a 7-6 victory over Trevecca Nazarene.
The Pacers improve to 4-0 on the season while the Trojans fall to 0-1.
Ty Barkell, Matt Bosse, Tyler Moore and Chaz Pal all recorded a pair of hits for USC Aiken while Kody Belcher, Max Schoen and Rob Youngblood each had base knocks.
Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the second frame, Bosse hit a high fly ball that bent toward the right field foul pole. With the wind blowing left to right, Bosse's fly ball cleared the fence by two feet, knotting the contest.
Trevecca Nazarene managed to score a run in the third and three in the fifth before head coach Kenny Thomas' team cut into the deficit.
In the bottom of the fifth, USC Aiken had two outs before Chaz Pal got things started with a double to left center. He managed to trot home when Max Schoen singled to left making it 5-2.
After the Trojans plated a run in the top of the sixth, USC Aiken pulled within one in the contest with three runs in the bottom half of the stanza.
Sean Miller drew a walk and scampered to second on Tyler Moore's shot to left field. Ty Barkell's single plated Miller while Moore advanced to third. TJ Costen lofted a sacrifice fly to center field as Moore scored. Barkell moved up 90 feet on the play.
TNU changed pitchers, but Bosse ripped a single up the middle, plating Barkell.
USC Aiken's hurlers did the job in the seventh, shutting the visitors down. In the bottom of the frame, Thomas' squad knotted the contest at 6-6.
Kody Belcher singled to right and moved to second with one down. Barkell's single tied the contest as Belcher raced around third before easing up as he crossed home plate.
The Pacers took the lead in the bottom of the eighth when Zach Moon's sacrifice fly allowed Pal to score. Pal led off the inning with a triple to left center field.
James Lynch, who registered the final out of the eighth inning, stayed in the game and picked up the win by hurling a scoreless ninth for USC Aiken.
For the game, Forrest Koumas earned the start and tossed 4.1 innings. He gave up five runs on six hits. Koumas struck out six and walked six. Ben Black worked 1.2 frames. He gave up one run on four hits and struck out a pair of Trojans. Cole Lee did not allow a run in 1.2 innings. He struck out one and gave up a pair of hits.
The Pacers return to action tomorrow at 1 p.m., when they square off against the Trojans in the second game of the series.
