Pacers Claim Series-Opening Victory Over Bobcats

AIKEN, S.C. - The University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team registered an 8-5 victory over visiting Georgia College in the first game of the three-game Peach Belt Conference series.


The Pacers improve to 10-5 on the season, including a 3-4 mark against conference foes. The Bobcats fall to 3-8 overall and 0-4 in league play.

Erik Davis picked up the victory for USC Aiken while James Lynch garnered the save. Davis tossed four innings of two-hit ball. He struck out three batters looking en route to the win. Cole Lee worked two innings, giving up just one hit while striking out one. Lynch pitched a scoreless ninth and struck out the final batter of the game.

TJ Costen led the offense with three hits while Sean Miller recorded a game-best three RBI. Douglas Ard, Kody Belcher, Sean Miller and Tyler Moore had two hits apiece. Costen and Moore each drove home two runs while Ard had one RBI.

After GC jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, head coach Kenny Thomas' team sliced the deficit to just one in the bottom of the frame. Ty Barkell singled, pushing Moore to second, who had reached on a fielder's choice. Costen laced a single to left, scoring Moore to make it a 2-1 contest.

The Bobcats picked up three runs in the second for a 5-1 advantage. USC Aiken managed to keep GC off the board in the third and fourth innings before its offense went on the attack.

Chaz Pal led off the fourth with a walk. With one down, he moved to second on a wild pitch prior to Ard earning a walk. Each runner moved up 90 feet on a wild pitch with two down. After Belcher walked, Sean Miller ripped an opposite-field triple down the right field line, clearing the bases. Moore singled home Miller, knotting the score at 5-5.

The Pacers took a 6-5 lead when Ard singled in Costen, who had reached on a double. Costen moved to third on a wild pitch before crossing home in the bottom of the fifth.In the sixth frame, Belcher led off the stanza with a double to right. He scampered to third on Miller's sacrifice bunt before Moore''s single brought him home for a 7-5 edge. Costen's hit to left allowed Moore to score, pushing the advantage to 8-5.  

For the game, Thomas' team posted eight runs on 15 hits without committing an error. GC accounted for five runs on 12 hits with no miscues .

Forrest Koumas earned the start for USC Aiken. He worked two innings while giving up five runs on seven hits. He also struck out four.  

The Pacers return to action Saturday when they square off with the Bobcats. The doubleheader is slated to start at 1 p.m.
