AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken women's tennis team posted a hard-fought 5-4 victory over Erskine Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference affair.
The Pacers are now 6-2 on the season while Erskine is now 1-3.
Head coach Steve Dahm's team took control in doubles action, winning two of the three matches. USC Aiken was extremely close to having a 3-0 lead, but the No. 2 team from Erskine managed to earn a 9-8 victory.
At the top spot in doubles play, the tandem of Nadine Tusiama and Shauna Williams bested the competition by an 8-5 count. Oliver Veskovac and Marie Habiyaremye ousted their foes by an 8-2 score at the No. 3 position.
Dahm's group was in for a tough match in singles action as the top three seeds in his line-up all suffered defeats. However, Kayla Calvert, Veskovac and Habiyaremye all registered wins, giving the team the overall victory.
Calvert dropped her first set at the No. 4 spot 7-5, but posted wins in the second and third sets, respectively, by scores of 6-3, 6-4. Veskovac had little trouble with her opponent, winning 6-1, 6-0. Habiyaremye tallied a 6-1, 6-3 victory at the No. 6 slot.
The Pacers return to action Saturday when they travel to Savannah, Ga., to face Flagler in a neutral-site Peach Belt Conference contest. The match is slated to start at 2 p.m.
