Box Score SAVANNAH, Ga. – The No. 14 University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team dropped the final two games of the series at Armstrong State Sunday by scores of 11-10 and 11-9.
The Pacers are now 6-4 on the season, including an 0-3 mark against Peach Belt Conference competition. The Pirates are now 8-1 on the year and are 3-0 against league competition.
In the second game of the series, which started Saturday afternoon but was halted due to darkness, the Pacers found themselves trailing 7-0 after four innings before rattling off five runs in the sixth and five in the seventh for their 10 runs. The Pirates tied the contest with three in the bottom of the seventh.
Tyler Moore led off the sixth by drawing a base on balls. He quickly moved to second on a wild pitch. TJ Costen singled prior to advancing to second on a wild pitch. Another wild pitch brought Costen to third while Moore scored on the play. Chaz Pal singled home Costen before Zach Moon doubled home Pal. Randy Luckett smashed a two-run homer to left field, making it a 7-5 contest.
Moore singled and stole second to lead off the seventh inning for USC Aiken. Ty Barkell walked and Costen singled and another wild pitch moved both runners up 90 feet.
With one down, Pal doubled home Moore and Barkell. Cory Bryant came through with a two-out, two-RBI single that plated Pal and Costen. Bryant quickly stole second and third before Kody Belcher plated him with a single up the middle.
The Pirates scored three in the bottom of the seventh stanza, tying the game. In the bottom of the eighth, the contest was called due to darkness Saturday. In the eighth, Armstrong State scored the game-winning run. USC Aiken was not able to knot the game in the top of the ninth.
In the final game of the series, head coach Kenny Thomas' team jumped on top of the home squad with a three-run first inning. Belcher led off the game with a walk but was erased at second base on a fielder's choice by Sean Miller. Two batters later, Barkell smashed a homer to right field for a 2-0 lead. Costen followed him up with a single before eventually moving to third. He came home on a wild pitch for a 3-0 advantage.
The Pirates tied the game in the second at 3-3, but USC Aiken answered with a pair of runs in the fifth. Belcher led off the frame with a double to right. He moved to third when Miller reached on an error. A failed pick-off attempt allowed Belcher to score while putting Miller on third. Miller later scored on a wild pitch, taking a 5-3 score.
Armstrong State scored five in the sixth, making it 8-5. However, the Pacers answered with four runs in the seventh inning.
Moore led off the stanza with a walk and moved to second on Barkell's single. The Pacers loaded the bags when Costen walked. With one down, Pal reached on a fielder's choice, which scored Moore. A single by Douglas Ard once again loaded the bases.
Rob Youngblood reached on an error by the shortstop that allowed Costen and Pal to cross home plate. Belcher's RBI single that scored Ard gave USC Aiken a 9-8 advantage. However, the Pirates managed to strike for three runs in the bottom of the eighth for an 11-9 lead. USC Aiken was unable to even the contest in the ninth.
For the game, Barkell and Youngblood each drove in two. Miller and Costen each scored twice. Belcher, Barkell and Costen all had three hits.
Matt Hissong took the loss in the final game of the series. Trevor Hutto had the start and worked five innings, giving up six runs on nine hits. He also struck out four. Nick Yobbi, Jared Felix, Hunter Hubbard, James Lynch and Sam Daniel all saw time on the mound.
The Pacers return to action Wednesday when they host Paine. The game is slated to start at 2 p.m.
