No. 6 Lander 3, No. 3 Wingate 1
AIKEN, S.C. – The No. 6 seeded Lander Bearcats upended No. 3 seed Wingate Friday afternoon in the first round of the NCAA Southeast Regional.
Set scores were 25-23, 25-18, 21-25, 25-20.
The Bearcats improve to 25-12 on the season while the Bulldogs end their year with a 28-5 record.
Leading the way for Lander was Halle Dotson's 11 kills. Sophia Perkins dished out 18 assists while Ali Kirk contributed 13 in the victory. The squad posted 76 digs as Mallory Taylor led the way with 22. Julia Ferreira-Alves garnered 19 while Kendall Korte added eight.
Tarryn Angermeier and Korte each blocked five shots while Reyonia Whipple was in on four blocks.
In the loss, Oakley Attaway posted a match-best 22 kills. Shelly Stumpff added 20 kills while Katie Bludau chipped in 11.
Iris Brewer dished out a match-high 41 assists but was whistled for 10 ball handling errors.
Kimberyly Hovey tallied a match-high 27 digs while Kori Adams added 16. Brewer garnered 15 and Bludau 11.
The Bearcats return to action Saturday in the second round of the NCAA Tournament at 5 p.m, against No. 7 Lenoir-Rhyne.
No. 7 Lenoir-Rhyne 3, No. 2 Flagler 1
AIKEN, S.C. – The No. 7 seeded Lenoir-Rhyne Bears upended the No. 2 seed Flagler Saints Friday afternoon in the first round of the NCAA Southeast Regional.
Set scores were 25-22, 25-21, 19-25, 25-19.
The Bears improve to 24-7 on the season while the Saints end their year with a 23-8 record.
Leading the way for Lenoir-Rhyne was Brooke Redmond's 13 kills. Briana Gottberg dished out 14 assists while Jessica Funk contributed 13 in the victory. The squad posted 92 digs with Bailey Cloninger leading the way with 26. Morgan Bunker garnered 24 while Funk added 10.
Emily Steele and Brandi Thomas each blocked four shots while Samantha Bishop and Bunker were in on three blocks.
In the Flagler loss, Taja Valmyr posted a match-best 15 kills. Sara Davis added 12 kills while Ashley Cheewah chipped in nine.
Tara Savisky dished out a match-high 40 assists.
Caitlyn Kovach tallied a match-high 29 digs while Shea Hamilton added 23. Ashley Lechleidner garnered 13 and Savisky chipped in 11.
The Bears return to action Saturday in the second round of the NCAA Tournament at 5 p.m., where they will square off with No. 6 seed Lander.
No. 4 Carson-Newman 3, No. 2 Armstrong State 2
AIKEN, S.C. – Carson-Newman University's volleyball team earned a hard-fought 3-2 win over Armstrong State in the first round of the NCAA Southeast Regional.
The Eagles opened the contest with two set wins, 25-19 and 25-21, before the Pirates battled back with a pair of wins of their own, winning 25-17 and 25-20.
The two squads then battled back-and-forth in the fifth and final set before Carson-Newman was able to pull away for a 15-10 win.
Maddie Borch led the Eagles with a match-high 22 kills. Sara Fairley chipped in 15 of her own while Molly Locke and Natalie Harris added 13 and 10, respectively.
Anna Patton had a match-high 49 assists. Taylor Lowe led the squad with 34 digs while Patton added 21 of her own.
Allie Foster notched four blocks and Borch and Harris added three blocks each.
Raegan Grooms paced Armstrong State with 14 kills while Anna McGee and Raquel Kulak chipped in 10 each.
Kristi Vaughn led the Pirates with 26 assists with Carly Eiken adding 20 of her own.
McGee garnered a match-high five blocks. Iva Scepanovic boasted a match-best 41 digs.
Carson-Newman will play tomorrow at 7:30 p.m.
#8 Erskine 3, #1 USC Aiken 0
AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken volleyball team saw its season come to an end with a 3-0 loss to Erskine in the first round of the NCAA Southeast Regional.
The Pacers conclude their season at 27-6.
Head coach Glenn Cox's team was paced by Ashley Diedrich's 14 kills. She narrowly missed a double-double with nine digs and hit .278 for the match.
Julia Forster contributed seven kills and hit .294. Emily Teelondished out 32 of the team's 35 assists. Teelon and Alicia Hineswere each in on three blocks.
Monica Cardona led the way with 11 digs while Katie Toman andShawn Hotson chipped in 10 and eight, respectively.
For the match, USC Aiken hit .159 while the Flying Fleet posted a .293 attack percentage.
The Pacers raced out to a 10-5 lead in the opening frame when Hines and Taylor Stratton registered a block. The teams traded the next four points with Aly Johnson's slam pushing the score to 12-7.
USC Aiken maintained a 15-10 edge on a kill from Diedrich. The squad broke an 18-18 tie with three straight points, forcing a time-out by the Flying Fleet.
Cox's squad led 22-19, but Erskine rattled off five of the next six points for the win in the opening frame.
It looked as if USC Aiken would rebound quickly, taking a 6-3 lead in the second set off a kill from Diedrich. However, the visitors tied it at 6-6. The teams traded the next two points, but Erskine was able to take a 14-10 lead.
After a pair of kills from Johnson and Diedrich, the Flying Fleet registered three of the next four points for a 17-13 advantage. USC Aiken pulled within two at 17-15 before Erskine rattled off five straight points. The Pacers were unable to get closer than six in the 25-17 loss.
The third frame was evenly matched in the early going. The Pacers took a 17-14 lead on a kill by Diedrich, but Erskine embarked on a 7-1 run and closed out the set with a 25-20 win.
It marked the last match for Monica Cardona, Ashley Diedrich, Aly Johnson and Jenni Law.
