Box Score AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken women's basketball team lost a 105-93 double-overtime affair to Shaw Tuesday night in the Convocation Center.
The Pacers fall to 4-3 on the season while the Bears improve to 6-1.
Head coach Mike Brandt's team was paced by Stephanie Ball's 19 points. She was one of five student-athletes in double figures for USC Aiken. Emry Tsitouris posted 16 points and a team-high six rebounds while Rachell Aupont came off the bench to contribute 14 points, five boards, four assists and a pair of steals.
Mariah Durian and Kassy Johannsen each tallied 12 points in the contest.
The Pacers opened the game on an 11-2 run in the first 3:55. During the span, Ball and Durian kick-started things with back-to-back three-point baskets. Leading 6-2, Aupont drained a deep three-pointer off a pass from Kate Duff and Johannsen finished the strong opening spurt with a lay-up. However, USC Aiken missed its final 11 shots of the period while the Bears managed to take a 17-12 lead going into the second stanza.
Trailing 21-12 with 9:08 to play, Baylea Loven's jumper off a pass from Ball stopped the scoreless streak. Down 31-16, Tsitouris nailed a jumper and Carly Gilreath connected on a deep two-point basket, slicing the deficit to 11 at 31-20 with 5:20 to go in the half.
Jasmine Coach kept things going with a pair of charity tosses while Ball's three-point shot made it a 31-25 contest with 3:27 to play. The Pacers cut it to five on Coach's jumper, but a pair of free throws by the Bears with two seconds remaining made it a 37-30 game at the break.
Trailing 50-36 with just under three minutes to go in the third, Johannsen buried a jumper, starting another run for the home team. Aupont hit the second of two free throws and after a basket by the Bears, Coach answered the bell with a three-ball, making it 52-42.
With the score at 55-42, Aupont and Durian connected on four straight free throws. Aupont ended the scoring at the end of the frame with a three-pointer for a 55-49 score heading to the fourth.
USC Aiken trailed 62-54, but Durian's jumper pulled the team within six with 6:52 to play in regulation. Durian hit a pair of free throws on the team's next possession and Ball made a twisting lay-up, making it 62-60 with 5:25 to play.
Alexis Ware nailed a three-pointer off a pass from Ball, knotting the contest at 63 apiece just under four minutes to go. After Shaw extended the lead to 67-63, Tsitouris found the bottom of the net. Tsitouris answered the call after a free throw by the Bears, hitting a lay-up and making it 68-67.
Trailing 69-67, Tsitouris converted an old-fashioned three-point play with 12 seconds to go, but the Bears answered with a three-pointer of their own for a 72-70 lead with a second remaining. However, the Bears were whistled for a technical foul as a player ran on the court celebrating. Durian hit a pair of free throws to send the game into overtime.
In the first session, the Pacers took an 82-79 lead on another three-point play by Tsitouris. The teams traded baskets and Durian's free throw with 13 seconds to go pushed the score to 85-83. However, after a scramble underneath, Eboni Ross knotted the game with one tick remaining.
USC Aiken took an 87-85 lead in the second overtime on a lay-up by Tsitouris, but the Bears answered with eight straight points before Ball nailed a three-pointer, making it 93-90. However, the visitors would score 12 of the final 15 points en route to the victory.
For the game, USC Aiken connected on 31-of-78 shots from the floor (39.7 percent), but nailed 11-of-25 from downtown (44 percent). The squad nailed 20-of-24 shots from the charity stripe (83.3 percent).
Brandt's team dished out 24 assists on the 31 buckets and tallied nine steals to the visitors' seven. In the game, there were nine ties and five lead changes.
