Box Score AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken men's basketball team lost an 88-80 overtime decision to Florida Southern Sunday afternoon.
The Pacers are now 1-4 on the season while the Mocs improve to 4-2.
Head coach Mark Vanderslice's team placed five student-athletes in double figures for the first time this season.
Arbry Butler led the way with a huge 21-point, 15-rebound double-double performance. Keith Belfield added 17 points and six assists while Jevon Patton contributed 16 points, five rebounds and a game-high four assists. Hendrix Emu accounted for 11 points, six rebounds and three steals. Jordan Foster connected on three shots from downtown en route to a 10-point performance. Gavin Stephenson came off the bench to hit for five points.
After a back-and-forth affair in the early going, Patton found Butler for a slam at the 13:54 mark for a 12-10 lead. Forty-one seconds later, Foster drained a three-pointer from the wing off a pass from Stephenson for a 15-10 edge. A Stephenson jumper pushed the lead to 17-10 at the 12:07 mark.
FSC reeled off a 14-4 spurt in a little over two minutes for a 24-21 margin, but Belfield was fouled on a three-point attempt and calmly sank all three free throws, tying the contest at 24-24.
Tied at 33, the visitors went on a 7-0 run, but Belfield stopped the bleeding with a basket with 1:06 to play in the half. After another three-pointer by the visitors, Butler converted an old-fashioned three-point play. David Belfield snagged a rebound near the end of the half and threw an outlet pass to Stephenson, who nailed a 22-footer at the buzzer, making it 43-41 at the break.
The Mocs increased their lead to 49-42 at the 17:34 mark, but Patton hit a free throw. Keith Belfield followed it up with a jumper and Foster's three-pointer made it a 49-48 game with 15:32 to play. Belfield finished the spurt for the Pacers with a lay-up off a pass from Emu for a one-point lead.
Vanderslice's squad embarked on a 6-1 run, making it 66-61 with 4:32 to play. However, the visitors knotted it with 2:13 to go.
Trailing 69-67, Emu nailed a three-pointer off a pass from Foster for a 70-69 lead with 12 seconds to play. After forcing a turnover, Emu was fouled and made one-of-two. However, Dylan Travis went coast-to-coast for the tying basket with one second to play in regulation.
USC Aiken scored the first point of the extra session, but the Mocs rattled off 11 straight points for an 82-72 edge. Vanderslice's team pulled within five, but could get no closer.
For the game, USC Aiken canned 28-of-66 from the floor (42.4 percent), including a 10-of-25 effort from downtown (40 percent). The squad made 14-of-21 charity tosses (66.7 percent).
The Pacers were out-rebounded 45-40, but dished out 16 assists on 28 field goals. Vanderslice's team controlled the paint, outscoring the visitors 28-18, but the Mocs held a 12-0 advantage in fastbreak points.
