Survive And Advance
The USC Aiken volleyball team rattled off a four-set victory over a tough Georgia College team in the opening round of the Peach Belt Conference Tournament. With the victory, the Pacers will now host the semifinals and finals of the tournament. The semifinals will take place Friday beginning at 5 p.m., with the Pacers tangling with the Bearcats of Lander at 7:30 p.m., in the Convocation Center.
Toman's Diggin' It
Junior Katie Toman put up an impressive 38 digs in the Peach Belt Conference quarterfinal game against Georgia College. Her tally established a school record for a four-set match and was the fourth-most digs overall since the rally scoring era began.
Solid Defensive Play
Although the team hit .086, it still won due to stellar defensive play by the entire team. The squad had one solo block and 18 block assists while the back line registered 105 total digs. In addition to Katie Toman's 38 digs, Ashley Diedrich and Emily Teelon each contributed 15 while Monica Cardona tallied 14 and Danielle Mercer totaled 11. The 105 digs were 10th most in school history during the rally scoring era and were the third most in a four-set match during that time.
Block Party
The Pacers rattled off one solo block and 18 block assists for a 10-total block effort. Senior Aly Johnson led the way with six blocks, with one being of the solo variety and five block assists. Ashley Diedric also chipped in with five block assists.
E.T. Playing Out Of This World
Sophomore Emily Teelon, recently named PBC Specialist of the Week, had a solid contest against Georgia College. Her 45 assists were more than the entire Bobcat team. Teelon registered a double-double with 45 assist and 15 digs. For good measure, she added four kills without a miscue and added a pair of blocks.
Region Rankings
In the latest regional rankings, the Pacers were No. 1 with a 25-4 overall record through matches played Nov. 15. Wingate is second while Flagler is third. Carson-Newman, Armstrong State, Lander, Erskine, Montevallo, Limestone and Lenoir-Rhyne round out the top 10.
In The Region
One team has already solidified its spot in the upcoming NCAA Tournament. Last weekend, Erskine claimed the Conference Carolinas Championship with a 3-1 victory over Limestone. The victory gave the Flying Fleet the automatic berth. This weekend, the South Atlantic Conference will have its postseason tournament in Anderson, S.C., Nov. 20-22. The Peach Belt Conference concludes its postseason tournament Friday-Saturday at USC Aiken.
What This Weekend Means
This weekend, the USC Aiken volleyball team could clinch the No. 1 seed in the upcoming region tournament. Heading into the PBC semifinals, the Pacers are No. 1 in the region. Wingate, the No. 2 team, is competing in the South Atlantic Conference Tournament starting Nov. 20 in Anderson, S.C. The No. 3 team in the region is Flagler.
Against The Opponents
USC Aiken has faced all three opponents a pair of times this season. With the sweep of Lander, the Pacers are now 31-8 in the all-time series against the Bearcats, having won six straight. USC Aiken is 5-15 in the all-time series against Flagler as the teams split a pair of matches this season. The Pacers won the first contest in the Convocation Center while the Saints won on their home court last weekend. USC Aiken is 25-34 in the all-time series against Armstrong State, having won the last three contests against the Pirates. USC Aiken hosts Lander Friday nght in one semifinal while the Pacers host a neutral-site battle between No. 2 Flagler and No. 3 Armstrong State in the other semifinal.
